In 1998 they released the EP The Dance. 1999 was a slow year for Within Temptation, but after finishing their studies in December 2000, they released a new album entitled Mother Earth. The album was a huge success, and the band played for a large number of fans at many big festivals and sold-out concert halls. Two singles followed; Our Farewell and Ice Queen. Their definite breakthrough came in 2002, when their single Ice Queen reached #1 in Netherland and Belgium. Mother Earth reportedly sold more than 350,000 copies in Europe and reached triple platinum status in Netherland, and Gold status in Belgium. In both countries they received the TMF/MTV Awards. The band played at the major festivals in the Benelux (Ozzfest, Lowlands, Dynamo, Rock Werchter, Pukkelpop and Parkpop), as well as in Germany (Rock im Park, Bizarre and Summerbreeze). In France, Within Temptation toured Paris, Lyon, Lille, Bordeaux and Toulon - all sold-out. Their third album, The Silent Force, was released on November 15th 2004 and instantly became a hit throughout Europe. Especially their single, Stand My Ground, received massive radio play, and the album itself went Gold in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium within two months of its release.
