After one experience during a gig there, the comedian Les Dawson refused to play the venue again. Lancaster was cremated; his ashes were interred at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery. Later it was rumoured that a ghost of Sid was in the dressing room he occupied on the night of his death. He was 80 years old. He suffered a heart attack on the opening night of The Mating Season at the Sunderland Empire and died on the way to hospital at the age of 62. At home in Los Angeles on October 20, 1994, Burt Lancaster died of a heart attack. He later enjoyed success at the head of casts of TV situation comedies, notably George and the Dragon, Taxi and Bless This House. He eventually had to undergo open-heart surgery, and a cerebral stroke in 1990 left him in a wheel-chair, partly paralyzed.

When Hancock had Sid dropped from the show, Sid returned to films to become a leading member of the 'Carry On' team, originally to replace Ted Ray who had appeared in Carry On Teacher in 1959. He was married three times and had five children. The show was one of the most popular comedy series in Britain on both television and radio. Lancaster vigorously guarded his private life. In the final series, the show was renamed simply Hancock and Sid was not included in the cast. Mr. James was soon getting as many laughs as his partner. He also appeared in several TV films.

When this was turned into a television series his part was greatly increased to the extent that some viewers considered it to be a double act. He produced a number of films himself and also mentored such new directors as Sydney Pollack and John Frankenheimer, thus adding to his numerous acting achievements a pioneering role the development of independent cinema. In 1954 he began working with Tony Hancock in BBC radio's Hancock's Half Hour playing a character with his own name, who was a criminal who would usually manage to con Tony. Lancaster sought demanding roles and, if he liked a part or a director, was prepared to work for much lower pay than he might have earned elsewhere; he even helped to finance movies in whose artistic value he believed. In 1956, he co-starred in the science-fiction film Quatermass 2. This period brought him work on several European productions with directors including Luchino Visconti and Bernardo Bertolucci. In the same year he also appeared in Lady Godiva Rides Again and The Galloping Major. During the latter part of his career, Lancaster left adventure and acrobatic movies behind and portrayed distinguished characters, earning himself ever greater prestige among directors and audiences alike.

His first major comedy was The Lavender Hill Mob: with Alfie Bass he made up the bullion robbery gang headed by Alec Guinness and Stanley Holloway. His work was recognized in 1960 when he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, a Golden Globe Award, and the New York Film Critics Award for his performance in Elmer Gantry. Initially he worked in repertory before being spotted by the nascent British post-war film industry, making his first appearance in 1947 in the film Night Beat. In most of his roles, whether in drama, circus, western or other genres, the self-taught actor was successful; he evolved into a solid and versatile performer and eventually a superstar. He came to Britain in 1946 on the back of his service gratuity. In the mid '50s, Lancaster went on challenging himself with varied cinematic roles, and satisfied longtime aspirations by moving into film producing as well. During World War II, he was enlisted in an entertainment unit, and subsequently took up acting as a career. In two of the adventures, The Flame and the Arrow and The Crimson Pirate, his mate and friend from the circus years, Nick Cravet, played a leading role, and both actors impressed audiences with their acrobatic prowess.

Sid James (Sidney Joel Cohen) was born in Natal in South Africa. Subsequently, he played in a variety of movies, but especially in dramas, thrillers, military and adventure films. Sid James (May 8, 1913 - April 26, 1976) was a film and television actor. The actor won significant acclaim and appeared in two more films the following year. Though the play was not successful, Lancaster's performance drew the attention of a Hollywood agent who had him cast in the 1946 motion picture The Killers. During WWII, Lancaster performed in Army shows. Later, he worked as a circus acrobat until an injury forced him to give up the profession. He grew up in East Harlem and spent much of his time on the streets, where he developed great interest and skill in gymnastics.
