She lives in Beverly Hills, California. Thelma Todd has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6262 Hollywood Blvd. Stone is a member of Mensa International. Her remains were buried in "Bellevue Cemetery" in her hometown of Lawrence, Massachusetts. They have an adopted son born in 2000. Her death certificate states her cause of death as accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. Stone and Bronstein got a divorce in January 2004. The fact that her body was cremated caused theorists to conjecture that this had been done to destroy evidence and to prevent a second autopsy, however by this time authorities were satisfied with her official cause of death.

In 1999, she was rated among the 25 sexiest stars of the century by Playboy. The Los Angeles DA's department and a Grand Jury were unable to establish the true circumstances surrounding her death and the conjecture that surrounded it at the time and which has never been resolved with a definitive explanation is an early example of what would become known as a conspiracy theory with rumours and suppositions being accepted as fact, and widely divergent opinions being given credence. On February 14, 1998, she married Phil Bronstein, editor of the San Francisco Chronicle. Roland West had closed the door to the garage without realising Todd was inside and she had died as a result. In October 1997, she was ranked among the top 100 movie stars of all time by Empire magazine. A third theory was that Todd had turned on the motor of the car in order to keep warm, and had fallen asleep. In 1996, she received an Academy Award for Best Actress nomination for her role as Ginger in Martin Scorsese's Casino (1995), a role for which she won a Golden Globe award. Her resulting death according to this theory was accidental, however a key, which would have allowed her to escape was found in Todd's handbag.

In 1995, Empire magazine chose her as one of the 100 sexiest stars in film history. A second theory widely supported by Todd's friends was that Roland West had grown frustrated by Todd's flightiness and to keep her from leaving her premises to attend another party had locked her in the garage. In that year, she was rated by People magazine as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world. The investigation was unable to establish any evidence to support this theory. She subsequently posed nude for Playboy at the age of 32. Her role in the sexually-charged Basic Instinct (1992) brought her to greater notoriety, and the film became a popular cult movie. This was the only sign of violence and there was no evidence of any struggle taking place. Her appearance in Total Recall (1990) with Arnold Schwarzenegger gave her her first wide exposure. When Todd's body was found she had blood on her face and her nose was broken.

In the 1980s she played many parts in B-movies such as King Solomon's Mines (1985) and Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1987). One theory suggested that the gangster Lucky Luciano had tried unsuccessfully to coerce Todd into allowing gambling on her premises, and when she declared that would happen "over my dead body" had replied that he could arrange that. She married Michael Greenburg in 1984, a marriage which lasted just 3 years. Police were offered other alternatives throughout their investigations. She made her film debut in Woody Allen's Stardust Memories (1980) and had a speaking part a year later in the horror movie Deadly Blessing (1981). She had been involved in an argument with her then boyfriend Roland West, but her friends stated that she was in good spirits and were aware of nothing unusual in her life that could suggest a reason for committing suicide. In 1975, she won the Miss Pennsylvania beauty pageant. She had spent the last night of her life at a party hosted by entertainer Stanley Lupino and his daughter, the actress Ida Lupino.
