Shannen posed for a nine page pictorial in the December 2003 issue of Playboy magazine. Morrison has revealed that she was diagnosed with cancer in recent years, but that she is now in remission. Her private life has also been turbulent, with a six month marriage to Ashley Hamilton, son of George Hamilton. In approximately 25 film appearances and 35 television appearances, Morrison has portrayed a maid or housekeeper on 32 separate occasions (including in "Columbo" and the film "Troop Beverly Hills.") Morrison had just recently informed her agent not to offer her any more "maid parts" when the call for "Will & Grace" came in. She is now a regular on the series North Shore, a return to her prime-time soap roots. In addition to sparring with her employer Karen Walker, played by Megan Mullally, the Rosario storyline has also allowed her to marry Jack MacFarland, played by Sean Hayes in a marriage of convenience designed to prevent her impending deportation. She hosted Scare Tactics on the Sci Fi channel until the 2004 season. The role was originally created for a brief one episode appearance, but was so popular with viewers, that the character became a regular.

She left that series in 2001, after three years, claiming that her best work was being wasted on a show "for 12-year olds" (though rumors persist that her departure was against her will, due to a feud with costar Alyssa Milano). Her most widely recognisable recent role has been as the El Salvadorean maid Rosario Salazar in the NBC comedy television series Will & Grace. Although her departure from the series was reportedly acrimonious, it didn't stop Spelling from casting her in another series, Charmed. She was a regular performer on the sitcom The Flying Nun playing "Sister Sixto", and she continued in television guest roles until securing a recurring role in the soap opera General Hospital in 1982. She starred on the Aaron Spelling-produced Beverly Hills 90210 for four years, from 1990 to 1994. Born Rachel Mitriani and sometimes credited early in her career as Rachel Dominguez, Morrison has been a stage and television actress since the early 1960s. She was then cast as the oldest Witherspoon sibling, Kris, on the family drama Our House, which ran from 1986 to 1988.
