Cruz' parents also filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her. Her body was returned to the United States for interrment in the Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood, California. She subsequently pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and was sentenced to a one year suspension of her license, three years probation, a $2800 fine, and 750 hours of community service. Following an automobile accident, in which she suffered severe injuries, she became addicted to painkillers that ended with her taking her own life through an overdose of sleeping pills in 1999. Nine-year-old Jorge Cruz, Jr was crossing the street in the middle of the block when Gayheart pulled out of a line of cars to make a left turn. Gayheart struck and mortally injured Cruz. Beyond these activities, her favorite pastime was flying, having obtained her pilot's license and purchasing a 1936 German WWII Bi-plane. On June 13, 2001, Gayheart was driving in Los Angeles. Multi-talented, she also wrote the book Move Over Tarzan that was a woman's guide on how to compete successfully in a business world dominated by men.

Gayheart was engaged to director Brett Ratner but the couple seperated. Gayheart married actor Eric Dane on October 29, 2004. Despite her busy career, she became an accomplished sculptress and painter, her works on display at a number of one-woman shows in Los Angeles. Gayheart has appeared in several films, most often horror films or comedies aimed at a teenage audience: Somebody Is Waiting (1996), Nothing to Lose (1997), Scream 2 (1997), Hairshirt (1998), Urban Legend (1998), Jawbreaker (1999), Puppet (1999), From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter (2000), Shadow Hours (2000), Doppelganger (2001), Harvard Man (2001), and Pipe Dream (2002). Her widely publicized image led to acting jobs and, under the name Lois Hamilton or Lois Areno, she appeared in several Hollywood films as well as on television shows including many popular series such as the "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "Three's Company.". She has also been a regular on the television series Earth 2 (1994), Wasteland (1999), and Dead Like Me (2003) and has a re-occurring role on Nip/Tuck (2004). Although she earned degrees in Psychology and Fine Arts, and wanted to pursue her interest in the arts, her looks brought an opportunity with the Ford Modeling Agency where she became one of its top models during the 1970s. In 1995, she had a recurring role in the series Beverly Hills, 90210. Aurino and studied at Temple University in her native Philadelphia before going on to the University of Florence in Florence, Italy.

In 1992, she joined the cast of the soap opera Loving. A descendant of Italian nobility, she was born Lois I. Gayheart became well known from her appearances in a series of commercials for Noxzema skin cream beginning in 1991. Lois Hamilton, born October 14, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – died December 23, 1999 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was an accomplished model, author, actress, artist, and aviatrix. She moved to New York City at 15 where she completed her education at New York's Professional Children's School and the Lee Strasberg Institute and began a career acting and modeling. She is a coal miner's daughter.
