Rani Mukherjee is one of the top actresses of today, that's for sure and now, she has the right to say: "been there, done that." http://filmfaremagazine.indiatimes.com/articleshow/333625.cms?&right=1&fright=1&botlink=1. Patrick died suddenly from a heart seizure on the day before her 81st birthday, at Laguna Beach, California. Hum Tum was another big hit in the following year and by the end of 2004, her film, Veer-Zaara broke all records at the box-office and became a blockbuster accumulating more than 50 crores of rupees worldwide. Starring George Segal as Sam Spade Jr., forced to continue his father's work, and to keep his increasingly sarcastic secretary, the film attempted to turn its revered predecessor into a comedy, and was a box office failure. The year 2003 brought her Chalte Chalte, another hit with her favorite colleague, Shah Rukh Khan, despite not winning any awards for this one, she did get every other nomination for Best Actress within all the awards ceremonies for Indian Cinema. Her final film role was a reprise of her Effie Perine character in a reworking of the Sam Spade story titled The Black Bird (1975). Saathiya was a big hit for her which even got her another Filmfare Award but this time under the category for Best Actress judged by the critics which is even bigger than the popular award for Best Actress. Among her other films are Now, Voyager (1942), Mrs Parkington (1944), Mildred Pierce (1945), Caged (1950), There's No Business Like Show Business (1954), Vertigo (1958), Auntie Mame (1958), Pillow Talk (1959), and Summer and Smoke (1961).

It was not until 2002 when her movies started breaking box-office records. As Effie Perine, the loyal and quick-thinking secretary of Humphrey Bogart's Sam Spade, Patrick created one of her most enduring film characterisations. After winning several awards for her beautiful role in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, she was bombarded with countless offers. Over the next several years she played numerous supporting roles, without attracting much attention until she appeared in The Maltese Falcon (1941). She has been through a lot in the beginning of her few years here in Bollywood. She remained in Hollywood, and appeared in Border Cafe (1937). Though she had the introduction into the Bollywood through her first movie Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat in 1996, she was in the news with her wonderful performance in Ghulam and with her third movie Rani was in headlines again receiving the Best Supporting Actress award from Filmfare for her active and playful performance in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai thus enhancing herself in the Bollywood. Her disappointments continued when she was considered and then rejected for the lead role in Stella Dallas in favour of Barbara Stanwyck.

And it's a phenomenon that unless Rani hasn't put loads of concentration and tremendous personal effort in the roles she play, she wouldn't have been where she is now. Patrick had made her film debut in 1929 but since that time had not appeared in a single film, and RKO Studios were reluctant to allow an unknown actress to take a part in a film which they were beginning to realise had great potential. Being a cousin of one of the most versatile actress, Kajol, it's obvious that Rani too has got it through her genetic influences to enact the roles she's been given. Eventually the part was rewritten and split from a single character into two characters which were played by Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers. She is the daughter of director Ram Mukherjee. Her success in Stage Door (1937) led her to Hollywood to reprise her role in the film version. http://www.bollywoodheaven.com/details.php?image_id=1153.
