She attended Purchase College where she roomed with fellow actress Sherry Stringfield and, like Stringfield, her first role was on a soap opera; in Posey's case, it was on As the World Turns. Her first lead role was in Party Girl (1995). She has appeared in three of Christopher Guest's mock documentaries: Waiting for Guffman (1996), Best in Show (2000), and A Mighty Wind (2003).
