New Kids on the BlockNew Kids On The Block was a commercially successful boy band of the late 1980s formed in Boston in 1984. The members of the band were Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan Knight, brother Jonathan Knight, Danny Wood, and Joe McIntyre, all from Boston. Based on R&B/Pop quintet New Edition and assembled by their former manager & producer Maurice Starr, their self-titled first album in 1986 was largely ignored. Their second album, 1988's Hangin' Tough, sold eight million copies around the world, with three top ten singles: the title track, the saccharine "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)," and "You Got It (The Right Stuff)." With saturated coverage in teenage fan magazines and even a short-lived animated television series, they became hugely famous and sold millions more of their next two albums, one a recording of Christmas songs and the other 1990's Step by Step, with some of the songs co-written by the group members. Faced with the constant derision of people outside their preteen fan base and the maturation of that base, in the 1990s they split off from Starr and released one album of self-composed R&B, Face The Music, which, despite a mildly positive critical reception, sold poorly. The group broke up in 1994. After the group's demise, Wahlberg and Danny Wood formed a record label, and Wahlberg also produced two albums of his brother Mark Wahlberg, who has gone on to become a successful actor. Joey McIntyre and Jordan Knight each released moderately successful solo albums. Also, McIntyre has performed in Broadway musicals. More recently, Donnie Wahlberg has been involved in movies such as The Sixth Sense, the critically acclaimed mini-series Band of Brothers and the short-lived police drama series Boomtown in which he played Detective Stevens. After the group's demise, Wahlberg and Danny Wood formed a record label, and Wahlberg also produced two albums of his brother Mark Wahlberg, who has gone on to become a successful actor. In the meantime the headquarters had been moved to Berlin, where everybody lived now. The group broke up in 1994. Unfortunately Martin, an original member, had left the band having offspring, and so Chrissy once again stepped in temporarily. Based on R&B/Pop quintet New Edition and assembled by their former manager & producer Maurice Starr, their self-titled first album in 1986 was largely ignored. But the time was also right for the OXY's to put out a "real" new album as well. The members of the band were Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan Knight, brother Jonathan Knight, Danny Wood, and Joe McIntyre, all from Boston. In the fall of 2000 the compilation "Best before 2000" was released by Knock Out Records (and Cyclone Records in the States) because of the demand for the sold out 7"es and rare material - including all the singles and stuff from various comps. New Kids On The Block was a commercially successful boy band of the late 1980s formed in Boston in 1984. Chrissy left the band after the tour to have more time for his own project and fortunately Morpheus showed up. 1994 "Dirty Dawg" #27 UK. This seven weeks coast-to-coast affair in the company of the Dropkick Murphys (with whom another split-single had been done) and the Ducky Boys turned out to be a great success and should become one of the best things they had done so far. 1991 "If You Go Away" #16 US (1992 release), #9 UK. As a four-piece again the Oxy's set out in '99 on a full scale attack on various countries of Europe, playing more gigs than ever before as well as touring the whole USA. from "Face the Music"
1990 "Tonight" #7 US, #3 UK. 1998 didn't mean it good with the Oxy's and they had to take few blows, because some tours planned for a long time were cancelled just weeks before or had be called off for some reasons. 1990 "Step by Step" #1 US, #2 UK. The most exciting tour however was to come in summer of '97, when they had the chance to play in Japan for almost three weeks (along with the Discocks), and certainly went for it. from "Step by Step"
from "Merry, Merry Christmas"
1989 "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)" #1 US, #5 UK (1990 release). With their pal Arne joining in a few weeks later and taking over the bass, they seized the opportunity and started gigging abroad, too, as well as in Germany, where they had been touring twice in the company of Braindance (with whom a split-single was released at the same time, named "Mohican Melodies"). 1989 "Hangin' Tough" #1 US, #1 UK (1990 release). The response and reviews Oxymoron received for this album were more than anyone ever had expected and lots of fanzines and indie music mags became attentive all over the place. 1988 "Please Don't Go Girl" #10 US. The band paid the studio from their own money that they somehow managed to raise, but it was well worth it. 1988 "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" #3 US, #1 UK (1989 release). "Fuck the Nineties - Here's our Noize", as it was eventually called, had to be recorded as a three-piece because Filzlaus left after one tour and couldn't be replaced immediately. from "Hangin' Tough"
1990 "No More Games - The Remix Album" #19 US, #15 UK (1991 release), US Sales: 500,000. Mostly influenced by early Eighties' punk and Oi! stuff it was quite obvious what it would sound like in
general, but it was a long way until they finally made it on stage. 1990 "Step by Step" #1 US, #1 UK, US Sales: 3,000,000. The main
intention behind it all was to have a laugh and to get the kind of music across they were into, and since the early Nineties
didn't seem to have a lot of punk let alone skinhead bands being around anymore they felt an urge to get out and do it themselves
to keep it going. 1989 "Merry, Merry Christmas" #9 US, #13 UK (1990 release), US Sales: 2,000,000. Formed by Sucker and his drumming cousin Bjoern and completed by their mates Martin on the guitar and Filzlaus on the bass the
original line-up needed a couple of years and various efforts to see the light of the day under the name OXYMORON. 1988 "Hangin' Tough" #1 US, #2 UK, US Sales: 9,000,000. 1986 "New Kids on the Block" #25 US (charted in 1989), #6 UK (charted in 1990), US Sales: 3,000,000.
