Naomi Watts

In 2004 she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance in the film 21 Grams. and one for television at 1620 Vine Street. The quality and size of Watts' roles improved after Mulholland Dr., and she starred in the highly successful US remake of The Ring, a Japanese horror movie. Wyman has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; one for motion pictures at 6607 Hollywood Blvd. In 2001, Watts appeared in David Lynch's Mulholland Dr., a performance which won high praise but failed to gain her an Academy Award nomination. She gained fans of a new generation in the 1980s when she starred as the diabolical vintner Angela Channing in the nighttime soap opera Falcon Crest. Her first big break came with the 1995 movie Tank Girl with the part of Jet Girl. In the 1950s, she hosted a television anthology series, Jane Wyman Theater.

She first appeared in television commercials and then the drama series Home and Away in 1988 in the role of Julie Gibson. She starred in The Glass Menagerie, Just for You, Let's Do It Again, The Blue Veil (another Oscar nomination), So Big, Magnificent Obsession (Oscar nomination), Lucy Gallant, All That Heaven Allows and Miracle in the Rain. She only returned to acting when a casual invitation from a colleague to participate in a small play rekindled her passion for the scenic arts and prompted her to quit her job and dedicate herself completely to making it as an actress. She worked with such directors as Alfred Hitchcock on Stage Fright, with Frank Capra on Here Comes the Groom and with Michael Curtiz on The Story of Will Rogers. Upon returning to Australia, Watts went to work for a local department store and from there she went to work as assistant fashion editor with an Australian fashion magazine. The Oscar win gave her the ability to choose meatier roles, although she still showed a liking for musical comedy. In 1986 she took a break from acting and went to Japan to work as a model, but the experience was fruitless, and Watts describes it as one of the worst periods of her life, which lasted for about four months. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1946 for The Yearling, and finally won the Oscar in 1948 for her role as the deaf-mute rape victim in Johnny Belinda.

In Sydney, she attended several acting schools (and in the very first lesson in the first school, she met Nicole Kidman, with whom she shared a taxi home from class). Wyman finally gained critical notice in the film noir The Lost Weekend. Her father was a sound engineer with Pink Floyd and her mother is described by Watts as a hippie "with passive-aggressive tendencies" who used to threat to send her and her brother to foster care in order to convince her grandparents to take care of the family, since her mother had no money after her father's passing. Michael was adopted during their marriage. Her grandmother, Nikki, was Australian, which made it easier to obtain the documentation necessary, since Naomi and her family were entitled to Australian citizenship. In the previous year, she had co-starred with Ronald Reagan in Brother Rat. The two were married in 1940, but divorced in 1948. They had two children; Maureen Reagan (1941-2001), and Michael Reagan (born March 18, 1945). Then, during a trip to Australia, her mother became convinced that there was "the land of opportunities" and moved the family to Sydney in 1982. In 1939 she received her first starring role, in Torchy Plays With Dynamite.

She lived there until she was 14. In 1936, she was back in Hollywood, obtaining bit parts in My Man Godfrey and Cain and Mabel. Following her father's death, her mother relocated the family to the town of Llangefni (more especifically Llanfawr Farm, a district of Llangefni), in Northern Wales, where they lived with Naomi's grandparents, Hugh and Nikki Roberts, although her mother occasionally moved the family around Wales and England, usually to follow boyfriends, but she always ended up returning to Llangefni. The two moved back to Missouri, where Sarah Jane attended college, but in 1930 she began a radio singing career, calling herself Jane Durrell. Her parents, Peter and Myfanwy Watts had separated when she was four years old, and when she was seven her father died. When that was unsuccessful, she turned to her daughter as a surrogate, but neither was able to move Hollywood. Watts was born in Shoreham-by-Sea, Kent, England, where she lived until the age of eight. In 1928, she and her mother moved to Southern California, where her mother, Le Jerne Pichelle, tried to start her own acting career.
