Melissa Manchester

Melissa Manchester (born on February 15, 1951 at New York, New York) is a singer-songwriter and actor.

Biography

Manchester was born in the Bronx area of New York city to a musical family. Her father was a bassoonist for the New York Metropolitan Opera. Manchester started a singing career at an early age, learning the piano and harpsichord at the Manhattan School of Music and Arts, singing commercial jingles at age 15, and becoming a staff writer for Chappell Music while attending New York City's High School of the Performing Arts.

She studied songwriting at New York University with Paul Simon. Manchester then appeared on the Manhattan club scene, where she was discovered by Bette Midler and Barry Manilow, who took her on as a backup singer in 1971.

Her debut album, Home to Myself, was released in 1973; Manchester co-wrote many of its songs with Carole Bayer Sager. Two years later Manchester's album Melissa produced her first top ten hit, "Midnight Blue,". Manchester collaborated with Kenny Loggins to co-write Loggin's 1978 hit duet with Stevie Nicks, "Whenever I Call You Friend". In 1979 Manchester made the top ten with her own single "Don't Cry Out Loud."

In 1980 Manchester became the first singer to have two movie themes nominated for an Academy Award—"Through The Eyes Of Love" from the film Ice Castles and "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the film The Promise. Two years later she had her biggest hit "You Should Hear How She Talks About You", which won a Grammy for Best Female Vocal Performance.

Through the 1980s and 1990s Manchester alternated recording with acting, appearing with Bette Midler in the film For the Boys and on the television series Blossom.

Dannii's You Won't Forget About Me entered the UK Single Charts at #7, making it the 5th biggest club track in the UK of 2004. Flower Power, the original instrumental track by Flower Power was taken by Dannii and mated with original lyrics written by herself. After the success of this album Dannii was back in to studio to work on a new album but due to problems within the Label and a 'management change' within London Records' structure, Dannii parted with London Records in a mutually agreed decision. In 1997 Dannii landed a multi-million dollar contract with Eternal Records, who released the album Girl with her first top 5 hit All I Wanna Do.

The Essence Of Melissa Manchester (1997). After the poor sales of Get Into You, Dannii parted company with RCA and Mushroom Records. Tribute (1989). The follow up album Get Into You (1993) didn't take the scene as successfully, with This Is It being her only top 10 hit from it. Mathematics (1985). Dannii also filmed her first movie role in Secrets (1993). Emergency (1983). Love and Kisses and... was remixed and edited for a UK release in 1991.

Greatest Hits (1983). Her debut album Love And Kisses, released in 1990, contained five top 40 hits including Love And Kisses, Success, Jump To The Beat and Baby Love. Hey Ricky (1982).
