Lou Diamond Phillips (born Louis Upchurch February 17, 1962 at Subic Bay Naval Station, Philippines), named for Marine legend Lou Diamond, is an American actor. He has Filipino, Hawaiian, Chinese, Spanish, Scotch-Irish and eighth Cherokee Indian origins.

Biography

Phillips worked as an assistant director and instructor at the University of Texas, where he also studied Drama and Film Technique, between 1983-1986.

He is an alumnus of University of Texas at Arlington

Phillips' big break came with the starring role in 1987's La Bamba as doomed early rocker Ritchie Valens. Though the role garnered him laud from critics, he has since found it difficult to find another leading role in a big-budget Hollywood film.

The first low budget film in which he starred in was called Trespasses. During the making of this film, he met Julia Cypher, an assistant director who would later become his wife.

During the making of this film, he met Julia Cypher, an assistant director who would later become his wife. John Ritter has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6631 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood. The first low budget film in which he starred in was called Trespasses. He is interred in Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles. Though the role garnered him laud from critics, he has since found it difficult to find another leading role in a big-budget Hollywood film. He passed away the same day as the death of country musician, Johnny Cash. Phillips' big break came with the starring role in 1987's La Bamba as doomed early rocker Ritchie Valens. He collapsed during a taping of his TV series, 8 Simple Rules, on September 11, 2003, and died of an aortic dissection at the hospital in Burbank at the age of only 54.

Ritter went on to star in several stage performances before he was made a star by appearing in the hit TV series Three's Company in 1977, playing a single ladies man and culinary student, Jack Tripper, who lived with two female roommates. Under Nina Foch, he studied acting with Stella Adler and the Harvey Lembeck Comedy Workshop. Ritter soon changed his major to Theater Arts, graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama. After two years, he was persuaded to join a drama class given by leading drama coach and actress, Nina Foch.

He went on to the University of Southern California, where he majored in psychology and minored in architecture. Ritter attended Hollywood High School, where he was Student Body President. He was born Jonathan Southworth Ritter in Burbank, California, the son of Country singer/actor Tex Ritter and former actress Dorothy Fay.
