. Smith remains a popular actress in Venezuela. She gained a following as Tracy Vetter on the final season of the science fiction drama Forever Knight in 1995-1996, and was cast on the syndicated science-fiction series Andromeda in 2000; the series is currently in its fifth season. Her breakthrough came in the early 1990s, as "Estrellita Montenegro" in Cara Sucia, a Spanish soap opera that was viewed by millions across Latin America, in the United States and Europe. During the filming of another soap opera, Milagros, she met actor Paul Martin, whom she allegedly dated. She formed a local theature group in Toronto after graduation and landed her first film and television roles in the mid-1990s. As a young girl, she identified deeply with Venezuela's Latin American culture. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Ryder attended the University of Toronto, where he began acting. Born in Philadelphia, Smith grew up in Venezuela, which is the reason why she speaks Spanish perfectly.
