In 1999, her boyfriend David Strickland committed suicide. Leelee speaks fluent French and this has enabled her to land roles in L'Idole (2002) and the miniseries Les Liaisons dangereuses (2003), an adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos's classic novel of sexual intrigue. In 2002, she appeared in the film Hollywood Ending by Woody Allen. The title role in the TV movie Joan of Arc (1999) earned her a Golden Globe nomination and a second nomination followed her portrayal of Tosia Altman in the TV movie Uprising (2001). Her transition to movies has not gone well so far, as most of her movies, including Love Stinks, have been critically panned. She rose to fame in her mid-teens with her appearance in the movie Deep Impact (1998) and went on to play a modern Lolita in Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut (Released in 1999, although Leelee was not even seventeen when her nymphet-like scenes were shot), which led to the forming of a firm friendship with the director. She later starred in the short-lived action show Fastlane.

She claims to be a descendant of the family of King Jan Sobieski of Poland and collects locks of hair from her co stars. This was very different from her next major role, as a duplicitous vixen on Beverly Hills, 90210. Her first big break in show business was her role on the television program Saved By The Bell, as a nice girl teen. As a child, she competed in many beauty pageants, and she won the Miss Junior America pageant in 1987. She was born in Long Beach, California.
