The genie opened a magic window onto Ripa's Live with Regis and Kelly dressing room, showing Ripa ripping off her human face to show an ugly alien face, then going to a tied-up human, removing his heart and eating it. They have a son, Miles William, and a daughter, Stella Street. In the episode "Family Guy Viewer Mail #1", Peter Griffin found a genie in a beer bottle and his first wish was to see Kelly Ripa behind the scenes. She is married to Davis Guggenheim, director of the HBO TV Series "Tombstone". She has also made fun of herself on Family Guy, voicing herself. Since, she has starred in The Saint, Deconstructing Harry, and Palmetto. Further in another episode she had a brief 5 second cameo as herself in a skit about Thailand. Her portrayal of a prostitute mixed up with a suicidal alcoholic earned her a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards.

In another skit, Ripa spoofed the ubiquitous hair coloring ads in which she has appeared (in this skit, Ripa prefers Tressant Suprème because a main ingredient is crack cocaine, thus explaining her stereotypical "peppy" persona). Trying to shed her girl-next-door image, Elisabeth took a chance on a low-budget, high-risk project called Leaving Las Vegas. On Saturday Night Live skits about Live with Regis and Kelly, the role of Kelly Ripa is often taken by Amy Poehler. When Ripa hosted SNL, in one skit Poehler appeared as Ripa and Ripa as Angelina Jolie. She continued her acting work with Adventures in Babysitting, Cocktail, Soapdish and The Marrying Man, as well as playing the role of Jennifer Parker in the two Back to the Future sequels. In a mutual decision, the couple left the show: Consuelos last aired as Mateo in 2002 and Ripa last aired as Hayley in 2003. In 1984, she co-starred in The Karate Kid as the onscreen girlfriend of Ralph Macchio and a role as the teenage daughter of a military family in the short-lived series, "Call to Glory". Eventually, they had three children. Elisabeth watched helplessly.

A romance blossomed between the castmates and Ripa married Consuelos in 1996. Another brother William, died from a freak accident while on family vacation. Later, she was paired with Mark Consuelos' character, Mateo Santos. Her brother is Melrose Place actor Andrew Shue. Starting on the show in 1990, she was mostly a minor character until she was paired with Christopher Lawford's character, Charlie Brent, in a May-December relationship. Shue later attended Wellesley College and acted in television commercials for extra spending money. Acting in high school plays led to roles at local theaters, where she was noticed and cast as gothic teen turned suffering heroine Hayley Vaughan on the soap opera All My Children. Her father, who was active in Republican politics, once unsuccessfully ran for the US Senate in New Jersey.

Her parents divorced while she was in the fourth grade. Shue was born into a well-heeled and well-educated family and grew up in Bergen County, New Jersey.
