Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves

Keanu Charles Reeves (born September 2, 1964) is a Hollywood film actor. Although currently working in the United States, Reeves is a Canadian citizen and an avid ice hockey player/fan who was his High School team's MVP. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, his first name means "cool breeze over the mountains" in Hawaiian. His father is Asian American of Chinese and Hawaiian descent and his mother is English.

Reeves gained the notice of the critics in 1986's River's Edge, but his first major film role was in 1986, in the hockey movie Youngblood, starring Rob Lowe. Reeves's first popularly successful film was Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, in 1989. Indeed, and perhaps unfortunately for Reeves, much of his subsequent portrayal in the press has been influenced by his comically airheaded character Ted in that film.

Despite the fact that his acting has frequently been derided as wooden, Reeves has become a major box-office draw, and several of his films have become extremely popular. Speed, released in 1994, was a tremendous success for Reeves, surpassed in 1999 by the sci-fi hit The Matrix. Reeves reprised his starring role from that movie for the sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both box-office hits.

In the mid-1990s it was reported that he and gay CEO David Geffen, of the prolific but sporadic record company Geffen Records and Dreamworks pictures had gotten married. While they did know each other, this was obviously not the case. Friends called his house, congratulating him on a marriage he knew nothing about, which prompted some funny conversations.

In December of 1999, Reeves had a daughter with actress Jennifer Syme. Eva Archer Syme-Reeves was stillborn and in April of 2001, Jennifer Syme was killed in an automobile accident. She was buried next to their daughter in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Independent of speculation Keanu is reported to be very generous with his time and money, lending both to a variety of causes. He took a significant amount of the profits from his Matrix series and treated the hard-working special-effects crew to motorcycles, among other things. True to his Buddhist teachings, he does not have (by 'Hollywood' standards) many possessions and keeps his life uncluttered. He began playing bass with the rock band Dogstar, who have now gone "into hibernation". He currently plays bass in a band called becky (http://beckymusic.com) with former Dogstar drummer Rob Mailhouse, guitarist Paulie Kosta and singer Rebecca Lord.

He currently plays bass in a band called becky (http://beckymusic.com) with former Dogstar drummer Rob Mailhouse, guitarist Paulie Kosta and singer Rebecca Lord. In late 2004 Shawn published the one-issue-only progressive political magazine Final Edition (http://www.sevenstories.com/Book/index.cfm?GCOI=58322100960730) which features interviews with and articles by Jonathan Schell, Noam Chomsky, Mark Strand, and Deborah Eisenberg. He began playing bass with the rock band Dogstar, who have now gone "into hibernation". He is the son of William Shawn, longtime editor of The New Yorker, and journalist Cecille Lyon Shawn. True to his Buddhist teachings, he does not have (by 'Hollywood' standards) many possessions and keeps his life uncluttered. Before becoming a writer and actor, Shawn studied history, economics, and philosophy at Harvard and Oxford, where he originally thought he might become a diplomat. Independent of speculation Keanu is reported to be very generous with his time and money, lending both to a variety of causes. He took a significant amount of the profits from his Matrix series and treated the hard-working special-effects crew to motorcycles, among other things. Shawn's political work has invited controversy, as he often presents the audience with several contradictory points of view: in Aunt Dan and Lemon, which Shawn described as a cautionary tale against fascism, the character Lemon explained her neo-Nazi beliefs with such conviction that some critics called the play effectively pro-fascist.

She was buried next to their daughter in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. Among the best-known of these are Aunt Dan and Lemon (1985) and The Designated Mourner (1997), in both of which he appeared off-Broadway; the latter was made into a film by director David Hare. In December of 1999, Reeves had a daughter with actress Jennifer Syme. Eva Archer Syme-Reeves was stillborn and in April of 2001, Jennifer Syme was killed in an automobile accident. His later plays became more overtly political, drawing parallels between the psychology of his characters and the behavior of governments and social classes. Friends called his house, congratulating him on a marriage he knew nothing about, which prompted some funny conversations. His early work, such as Marie and Bruce (1978), portrayed emotional and sexual conflicts in an absurdist style. While they did know each other, this was obviously not the case. Shawn's career spans all aspects of "low" and "high" culture, and his plays, unlike some of his television appearances, are considered very serious (even if they often have comic aspects).

In the mid-1990s it was reported that he and gay CEO David Geffen, of the prolific but sporadic record company Geffen Records and Dreamworks pictures had gotten married. He is also an accomplished voice actor, appearing especially in animation (including Toy Story and Toy Story 2 where he played "Rex the Green Dinosaur") and commercials. Reeves reprised his starring role from that movie for the sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both box-office hits. He has had recurring roles as the Ferengi Grand Nagus Zek on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, a comic ex-reporter on Murphy Brown, the Cosbys' neighbor on The Bill Cosby Show and on many other shows. Speed, released in 1994, was a tremendous success for Reeves, surpassed in 1999 by the sci-fi hit The Matrix. Shawn is a widely-used character actor on television, where he has appeared in many genres and series. Despite the fact that his acting has frequently been derided as wooden, Reeves has become a major box-office draw, and several of his films have become extremely popular. Other notable appearances include his role as the Masked Avenger in Allen's Radio Days (1987) ("Beware, evildoers! Wherever you are!"), as the evil Vizzini in The Princess Bride (1987), and as Uncle Vanya in Andre Gregory's idiosyncratic Chekhov production filmed by Louis Malle, Vanya on 42nd Street (1994), a reading of the play set in a crumbling theater.

Indeed, and perhaps unfortunately for Reeves, much of his subsequent portrayal in the press has been influenced by his comically airheaded character Ted in that film. Interviewed by film critic Roger Ebert, Shawn and Gregory denied that they were playing themselves and stated that if they remade the film, they'd swap the two characters to prove their point. Reeves's first popularly successful film was Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, in 1989. The two actors also wrote the script, which contrasted Shawn's modest down-to-earth humanism against Gregory's extravagant New-Age fantasies, leaving the viewer of the film in an ironic suspension between the two viewpoints. Reeves gained the notice of the critics in 1986's River's Edge, but his first major film role was in 1986, in the hockey movie Youngblood, starring Rob Lowe. His most famous role was as one of the two characters in the film My Dinner with Andre, opposite Andre Gregory. His father is Asian American of Chinese and Hawaiian descent and his mother is English. He made his film debut playing Diane Keaton's ex-husband in Woody Allen's Manhattan in 1979, in which Woody's character, a short, balding, bespectacled ectomorph, dismisses the short, balding, bespectacled Shawn as "a homunculus.".
