Her nickname is Bobo. Since then she has been mainly involved in painting. She is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors. After divorce, May Britt resumed working with some sporadic TV guest appearances, the last in 1988. In 1990 she received the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Misery, as the insane Annie Wilkes, an obsessed fan holding her favorite author captive. They divorced in 1968. She was nominated for Best supporting actress in 1998 for Primary Colors and again in 2002 for About Schmidt. had one daughter and adopted two sons.

Once married, May Britt left the movies for her family. She did her first ever nude scene at the age of 43 in At Play in the Fields of the Lord (1991). At that time interracial marriages were forbidden by law in 31 US states out of 50, and only in 1967 those law were abolished by US Supreme Court. She attended the Southern Methodist University, majoring in theatre, and graduated in 1969. Their wedding caused controversy.
