Joanne Whalley

During her marriage, she used the name Joanne Whalley-Kilmer. In 2004, she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Cold Mountain. She was married to actor Val Kilmer from 1988 to 1996 and has two children. She has since starred and received Academy Award nominations for her roles in Bridget Jones's Diary and Chicago. Her most significant roles on British television were as Emma Craven in Troy Kennedy Martin's Edge of Darkness (1985), and Nurse Mills in the Dennis Potter-penned serial The Singing Detective (1986) both for BBC Television. Renee auditioned and won the lead. Her film roles include an early, unspeaking part in Pink Floyd's The Wall; Willow and the part of Christine Keeler in Scandal, about the Profumo Affair. While on the set of Chainsaw, she heard about the film Love and a .45, which was in the midst of casting for actors.

Born in Salford, she made her name in soap operas, especially Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Her breakout role was 1994's The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Though she took a drama class only because she needed a fine arts credit to complete her degree, it reminded her of how much she loved acting. After high school, she went to the University of Texas at Austin to major in English. She was a cheerleader, gymnast, and participated in the drama club. Renee, the daughter of a Swiss father and a Norwegian mother, graduated from Katy High School in Katy, a suburb of Houston in 1987.
