Javier Bardem

Javier Ángel Encinas Bardem (born March 1, 1969) is a Spanish actor. Born in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, he is the latest in a long line of a family which has been making movies since the earliest days of Spanish movie making. His film debut was at the age of 6, and he appeared in several television series before turning to painting and, eventually, athletics. He was a member of the Spanish national rugby team.

In 1992 he appeared in Jamón, jamón, an international hit movie. But his role in that film as a sexy stud made him afraid that he would be typecast, and he deliberately decided to avoid such roles later. He became well-known outside of Spain when he starred in Before Night Falls in 2000, as homosexual Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for the role, the first Spaniard to be so honored. In 2004, he won the Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for his role in The Sea Inside, a film about the true-life suicide of Ramón Sampedro.

In 2004, he won the Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for his role in The Sea Inside, a film about the true-life suicide of Ramón Sampedro. He died in London at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, from complications as a result of AIDS on October 10, 1993. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for the role, the first Spaniard to be so honored. During the 1980s, Bindon became a virtual recluse and heroin addict. He became well-known outside of Spain when he starred in Before Night Falls in 2000, as homosexual Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas. The trial along with the Oakland incident seriously damaged Bindon's reputation and he never worked in the entertainment industry again. But his role in that film as a sexy stud made him afraid that he would be typecast, and he deliberately decided to avoid such roles later. He gave himself up to police and in the subsequent trial at the Old Bailey in November, 1979 was acquitted of Darke's murder.

In 1968, he was awarded a police bravery medal for rescuing a drowning man in the River Thames. Mondays In The Sun (2003). His portrayal earned critical praise and it typecast him for future roles. The Sea Inside (2004). His next big break came with the Mick Jagger film Performance, where he played the role of a violent mobster.

He approached director Ken Loach who considered him perfect for the role of a rough husband in the film, Poor Cow, released in 1967. In 1966, Bindon decided to pursue acting in a bid to go straight. Growing up in the tough backstreets of London, he spent some weeks in juvenile detention on various charges. Bindon went to school at Fulham where he became a noted rugby union junior, but left at the age of 15.
