She is probably best known for her Academy Award nominated role as the mother of troubled boy Cole in the film The Sixth Sense. She sang the theme from Fame and "Flashdance (What A Feeling)". She has won three Australian Film Institute awards, including Best Actress in a Lead Role for Muriel's Wedding, in 1994, a role for which she gained 40 lb (18 kg) in seven weeks. Both her parents were from Puerto Rico and in the early 1950's they migrated to the U.S.. She has been married to Dave Galafassi since January 11th, 2003.
