The musical comedy High Society (1956) was her last film, as her marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco marked her retirement from acting. It was to be one of the longest running prime time detective drama series in US TV history and made her one of the highest paid actresses in the world and a record as the most nominated lead actress without a win in the prime time Emmy awards (with 12 nominations). While it was being filmed, she had engaged in a brief affair with co-star Bing Crosby which was kept quiet to protect both their reputations. In 1955 she was awarded the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Country Girl. She has received a Tony nomination for every lead role she has essayed on Broadway. Kelly made three films with Alfred Hitchcock: Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, and To Catch a Thief. Lovett in Sondheim's ballad opera Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street earned her yet another Tony Award in 1979.

Her appearance in 1966's Mame earned Lansbury her first Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Though her family had opposed her becoming an actress, Kelly became a fashion model and appeared in her first film, Fourteen Hours (1951), when she was 22. Lansbury has received good reviews from her very first musical outing, the short-lived 1964 Stephen Sondheim musical Anyone Can Whistle.

Kelly Drive in Philadelphia is named for John, Jr., who was a city councilman there. She also did character work as the Dowager Empress in the less well-received animated film Anastasia in 1997.
