Bartolomeo Pagano


Bartolomeo Pagano (1878 - 1947) was an Italian motion picture actor.

Before his cinema career, Pagano was a longshoreman who worked at the port of Genoa. There, he was discovered and selected to play the role of Maciste, a muscular slave, in the silent movie classic Cabiria in 1914. As the originator of this role, he went on to play the character many more times in a series of sequels that continued until 1926.

Bartolomeo Pagano (1878 - 1947) was an Italian motion picture actor. His film roles included parts in Ice Cold in Alex (1958), The Guns of Navarone (1961) and Lawrence of Arabia (1962).


. His own Shakespearian roles included Falstaff and Othello; he also appeared in contemporary plays. From 1948 to 1956 he directed at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, and laid the foundations for the creation of the Royal Shakespeare Company. After appearing in vaudeville, he joined the Old Vic in 1932. He was born in Ainsdale in Lancashire and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
