Anne Hathaway (actress)

Hathaway's desire to break out of her Princess Diaries image parallels that of her co-star, Julie Andrews, who went to the (then) extreme length of going topless in the film S.O.B. in order to break away from the image she created for herself in her 1960s musicals. She died of a heart attack in New York City in 2002. More recently, Hathaway filmed a supporting role in Brokeback Mountain, a Western film with gay overtones. She also appeared in several soap operas, most notably as Nola Madison on The Edge of Night. Hathaway downplays the film's explicitness in a late 2004 interview for Ingenue magazine. Her other major film roles include David Niven's fiance in the classic Powell & Pressburger film A Matter of Life and Death (1945), and Zira the ape scientist in the first three of the Planet of the Apes series. According to early reviews, Hathaway and most of the rest of the cast appear nude and engage in simulated sex in several segments of the raunchy film, although it remains to be seen whether these elements of the film will remain intact for general release. They both appeared in the 1951 film, for which Hunter won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

As of 2004, Hathaway has been trying hard to shed her sugar-coated image, and this may be a fait accompli with the soon to be released Havoc. She performed with Marlon Brando in the original Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), playing the role of Stella Kowalski. Anne, several years older then Rossum, was reportedly "too old" for the part. Kim Hunter (November 12, 1922 - September 11, 2002) was an American film and stage actress. A former top-ranking soprano in New York, Anne was puportedly a front-runner for the role of "Christine Daae" in the 2004 film adaptatin of The Phantom of the Opera. However, the role was later given to new-comer Emmy Rossum. She also had a notable role in the 2002 film production of Nicholas Nickleby, and a starring role in 2004's Ella Enchanted.

Hathaway has performed in television series, and gained widespread recognition with her role in The Princess Diaries and its 2004 sequel in which she starred with Julie Andrews, as a young girl who discovers she is a member of royalty.
