They reunited on February 8, 2001 in response to a request from KNRK in Portland, Oregon. His 2000 album The Hour of Bewilderbeast won a prestigious Mercury Prize. In the midst of recording their third album, Animotion suddenly disbanded. In 2002, Q magazine named Badly Drawn Boy in their list of the "50 Bands To See Before You Die", although this was as part of a sub-list of "5 Bands That Could Go Either Way". During 1986 and 1987 they toured extensively, appearing alongside performers such as Depeche Mode, Howard Jones, INXS, The Eurythmics, Simply Red, Phil Collins and Genesis. The first seven-inch single, EP1 was pressed about a year later to critical acclaim, although only 500 copies were made. They signed a record deal with Polygram Records in 1984 and made 2 albums. His friends Scott Abraham and Damon Hayhurst were having a joint exhibition of their art work on the night and Votel was djing as part of the bar's first year of opening.

They formed in 1983 from the remnants of a retro science fiction band called Red Zone. The Twisted Nerve empire was later spawned after a chance meeting with Andy Votel at Generation X bar in Manchester. Animotion is a 1980s pop band best known for the song Obsession.
