Its gold mining operations were spun off into the separate AngloGold corporation, which later merged with the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation to form AngloGold Ashanti. The company is not to be mistaken for AIB which is also an Irish bank. The current company was formed in 1999 when it merged with Minorco.
