Its gold mining operations were spun off into the separate AngloGold corporation, which later merged with the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation to form AngloGold Ashanti. It wholly owns shipping company American President Lines. The current company was formed in 1999 when it merged with Minorco. Neptune Orient Lines Limited (SGX: N03), or NOL for short, is a Singapore-based global transport company with core businesses in container shipping and supply chain management. The name derives from the locations of the sources of finance that were raised to form the company. The origins of Anglo American lie in the Anglo American Corporation which was founded in 1917 by Sir Ernest Oppenheimer.

It has its primary listing on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. Its headquarters are in London, England. Natural resources remains the focus of its operations. Anglo American plc is a world-wide group of companies, originally founded in South Africa as a mining enterprise but now extending into other areas.
