Nemi itself has a few late medieval to 18th‑century churches, but its main monument, dominating both town and landscape, is the Castello Ruspoli, the core of which dates to the 10th century. Aishwarya's films are in Hindi, except where noted below. The ship hull survives today at Museo delle Navi Romane, Nemi. She has also won three IIFA Awards, three Z-Gold Awards, four Screen Awards, an EU's Global Diversity Award, three Zee Cine Awards and a Rajiv Gandhi Award. Surviving remnants from the excavations as well as replicas are now displayed in the Museo Nazionale Romano at the Palazzo Massimo in Rome. She has been nominated four times in the Best Actress category and once in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Filmfare. The excavation was led by Guido Ucelli and was reported in Le Nave di Nemi by Guido Ucelli (Rome, 1950). Since then she has been romantically linked to rising star Vivek Oberoi and film dynasty scion Abhishek Bachchan. The ships were exposed by lowering the lake level using underground canals that were dug by the ancient Romans. Gossip has it that she was forced to drop out of the film Chalte Chalte after visits from Salman disrupted filming. They were salvaged from 1929 to 1932 by Mussolini as one of many attempts to relate himself to the Roman Emperors of the past. Earlier in her career, Aishwarya was involved in a high profile, allegedly turbulent relationship with Bollywood star Salman Khan. Thought to be only legend, they were finally found in 1446.

After Caligula's overthrow the boats were scuttled. The movie did well at the box office and Aishwarya's Hollywood profile rose a notch. One ship was a shrine dedicated to ceremonies for the Egyptian Isis cult or the cult of Diana Nemorensis, designed to be towed, and the other was a pleasure boat with buildings on it. British director Gurinder Chadha hired her to play the heroine in Bride and Prejudice, a Hollywood-funded but Bollywood-ized version of Jane Austen's classic novel, Pride and Prejudice. Later on, possibly in connection with this cult (nothing substantial is known of the matter), Caligula built several very large and costly luxury barges for use on the lake. Although frequently the subject of gossip column speculation about an imminent Hollywood career, it was only in 2004 that Rai finally acted in a foreign film. In antiquity the area had no town, but the grove was the site of one of the most famous of Roman cults and temples: that of Diana Nemorensis, a study of which served as the seed for Sir James Frazer's seminal work on the anthropology of religion, The Golden Bough. A wax figure of Rai is on display in London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum.

The town's name derives from the Latin nemus Aricinum, or "grove of Ariccia": the latter is a small town a quarter of the way around the lake. In 2004, she was chosen by TIME Magazine's Asian Edition as one of Asia's "100 Most Influential People." Rai was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on January 2, 2005 - "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World." A month later she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, and on April 25, 2005, she was featured on Oprah's "Women Across the Globe" segment. The official 2003 census figures put the population of the comune at 1,854. In 2003, Rai was a member of the jury at Cannes. It is 6 km (4 mi) NW of Velletri and about 30 km (18 mi) southeast of Rome. Rai was becoming an international star rather than simply a Bollywood one. Nemi, an old town and comune of Italy, is in the province of Rome, on the Alban Hills, in central Lazio, 41°43′N 12°43′E, at 521 metres (1709 ft) above sea-level overlooking Lake Nemi. The film attracted overseas attention as well, receiving a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

Official site of the comune of Nemi. Devdas, in which Aishwarya joined Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, was a huge hit, lavishly produced as it was. Rai has also acted in other Tamil films such as Jeans, Kandukondain Kandukondain, and in the Bengali film Chokher Bali. Later successes include Taal and Devdas. Her breakthrough came with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

Rai's earliest films made money, but Rai herself did not impress critics -- they commented that her performances were stilted, as if she were still modeling. The first film she acted in was the popular Tamil movie Iruvar in (1997), directed by Mani Ratnam. As a professional model, Rai has appeared in many Indian fashion magazines, including the Indian Vogue; more recently she has featured in international ads for L'Oréal, De Beers Diamonds, and Coca-Cola. In the 1994 Miss India Contest Rai placed second behind Sushmita Sen and went on to win the Miss World title.

Her brother Aditya Rai is a film producer. Rai was born in Mangalore to Krishnaraj and Vrinda Rai, in the South Indian state of Karnataka; her mother tongue is Tulu. . She is currently regarded as one of the biggest names in Bollywood.

She is in the cast for The Last Legion co-starring Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley. She will star opposite Brendan Fraser. Rai is now said to be signed for another Hollywood movie, Rolland Joffe's project Singularity.
