Along with making a post-Dancing with the Stars appearence in the November 2005 issue of Playboy (previously unpublished pictures from her Miss April 1997 shoot) , Monaco has also made numerous recent cover appearances in scantily-clad magazines such as FHM and Maxim. These campaigns have involved figures such as Pope John Paul, Dorismar, Los Tigres del Norte and Mana. The win on Dancing With the Stars boosted her visibility level considerably and resulted in a number of appearances on talk shows as well as possible new job offers, but she stated that she intends to remain with General Hospital. Conservationists in Mexico and the United States have launched "Don't Eat Sea Turtle" campaigns in order to reduce the urban black market trade in sea turtle products. From appearances, it is fair to say that Monaco was as happy about losing this match as O'Hurley was about losing the regular competition. Estimates are as high as 35,000 turtles killed a year in Mexico and the same number in Nicaragua. This time, O'Hurley and his dance partner Charlotte emerged as the winners. This is a pervasive problem throughout the world, but especially a concern in India, Indonesia and throughout the coastal nations of Latin America.

It was held "live" on September 20 and results were announced two days later. One of the biggest threats to sea turtles is the black market trade in eggs and meat. However, it was decided to have a "Dance-Off" special as a follow up to this controversial result, with a presumably lessened chance of Internet voting skewing the results. Special lighting ordinances may also be enforced to prevent lights from shining on the beach and confusing young hatchlings from thinking it is the moon or sun and crawling toward it, usually crossing a road. On July 6, 2005, Kelly Monaco won the Dancing With The Stars competition. Since sea turtles return to the same locations to nest, these areas may be protected by special police. Beach development is another very, very large area which has threatened sea turtles. Despite her perceived lack of height and an initial lack of grace, she improved each week and became a popular underdog. Small and inexpensive changes to fishing techniques, such as slightly larger hooks and traps from which sea turtles can escape, can dramatically cut the mortality rate.

In 2003 Monaco was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her Port Charles work. According to researchers at the 24th Annual Symposium on Sea Turtle Conservation and Biology, in Costa Rica the Pacific Leatherback has ten years before extinction if nothing is done to reverse these problems. When that program ended, she joined the cast of soap opera General Hospital as possible con woman Samantha “Sam” McCall in September 2003. Each year it is said that 40,000 turtles die from longlines alone. Monaco had two roles on the supernatural television soap opera Port Charles: Olivia “Livvie” Locke Morley (1999–2003) and Tess Ramsey (2002–2003). These days though their biggest threat comes from long-line fishing, and as bycatch in shrimp nets, as well as over development on nesting beaches. She also had minor roles in the late 1990s films BASEketball, Idle Hands, and Mumford. And coastal peoples have always gathered turtle eggs for consumption.

Her first television role was on the nightime drama Baywatch from 1997 to 1998. They used to be hunted on a large scale in the whaling days for their meat, fat and shells. The work allowed her the opportunity to travel to many exotic locales, including Fiji, Honduras, and throughout South America. The Flat back is considered Data Deficient due to lack of research.
