Battlefield 2

Battlefield 2 is a computer game in which up to 64 players, over the internet, fight in a modern battlefield using contemporary firearms and vehicles. Although the game was made primarily for internet play, it also includes a singleplayer mode with three difficulty levels. It is a sequel in the Electronic Arts Battlefield franchise, and was released in late June of 2005 to both critical and popular success. With a mixture of strategy and FPS elements, it utilizes a new engine for gameplay, physics, and graphics, as well as other functions. The game received an aggregate score of 90% from reviewers and topped the PC game sales charts from June to August 2005. Battlefield 2 is often compared to the popular Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942. Both games take place in modern times and, after the acquisition of Desert Combat developer Trauma Studios by Digital Illusions CE (DICE), developers that worked on Desert Combat went to work on Battlefield 2.

Overview

The game portrays a hypothetical war in the near future between three powerful factions: the United States Marines Corps (USMC), China's People's Liberation Army, and the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition (MEC). The battles, however, only feature USMC versus MEC and USMC versus China. The armies use modern weaponry: The Marines use well-known American weaponry such as the M1 Abrams tank and the M4 Carbine assault rifle, the Chinese mostly use Chinese-made copies of Soviet weapons (such as the Chinese Type 56 Assault Rifle, though the game calls it an AK-47), and the Middle Eastern Coalition use mostly Russian weapons. The various forces still use the trademark feature of the Battlefield series - the large stable of vehicles that any player, regardless of faction, specialty or experience, can climb into and control.

Battlefield 2 was originally scheduled to be released on March 20, 2005, but was delayed until June 23, 2005 for North America, and June 25, 2005 for Europe and Australia.

A console version with a similar theme also exists, named Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, although the game is quite different in execution and gameplay than the PC version.

Demo

A demo is available for download from major game sites featuring a single map ("Gulf of Oman") for both single-player and multi-player. The 16-person version of the map has a time limit of 10 minutes. the 32-person version has a time limit of 12 minutes. The 64-person version is unavailable in the demo, though up to 64 players can still play on the 32-person map. On most servers, the demo limits kits to the stock weapons. However, some servers allow users to use the unlockable weapons without achieving the standard requirements.

Maps

BF2 originally shipped with 12 maps, with Wake Island 2007 being added from the 1.03 patch onwards. Depending on the number of people the server is configured to accommodate, the scope and objectives of maps change. For example, when "Gulf of Oman" is played with only 16 people, it is an infantry and armor combat scenario with 4 objectives to capture. With more players, 2 new bases open up, spawning fighter aircraft and helicopters.

Single-player mode only allows access to the former, to the extent that purchasers who are unable or unwilling to play online have no built-in access to many of the game's vehicles, therefore the true value of the game is to play it online. Also, several maps are not available for single-player, such as the "Kubra Dam" map.

Infantry classes

Battlefield 2 players can pick from seven basic classes:

  • Assault troops carry an assault rifle with an attached grenade launcher, and can throw smoke grenades to cover friendly forces. Assault soldiers perform well in most situations.
  • Snipers pick enemies off from long range with a sniper rifle, and can plant Claymore anti-personnel mines.
  • Spec Ops can destroy structures and vehicles with 5 C-4 explosive charges, and also carry a Carbine.
  • Engineers have the wrench, which allows them to repair vehicles (including transports they are riding on), can deploy anti-vehicle mines, and defend themselves with a shotgun.
  • Medics are armed with a standard assault rifle, but also have the ability to heal teammates with medpacks and revive them with a defibrillator, which works like the reviving syringe in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. The defibrillator can also be used to zap enemy soldiers, although the knife is more effective because it does not need to charge up after attacks.
  • Support troops wield a light machine gun that can provide heavy covering fire, and replenish allies' supplies with ammunition packs.
  • Anti-tank soldiers have both a submachine gun and short-range anti-tank rockets, which destroy lighter vehicles in one hit and can damage even heavily armored tanks and APCs with careful targeting.

All classes carry a basic pistol and combat knife, and Spec Ops, Engineer, Support, Medic, and Assault (with unlocked weapon) classes spawn with hand grenades. After many points are earned, players can unlock alternate weapons for each class. For instance, snipers may choose the more powerful M95 sniper rifle (firing .50 BMG ammunition), and Spec Ops can use a H&K G36C carbine instead of the M4 Carbine.

On ranked servers, the players must earn points and become promoted to a higher rank in order to unlock a weapon of their choice (one per kit) if they wish to use them. Once unlocked, non-ranked servers can allow or disallow (server side) players from using the weapons they have unlocked on ranked servers.

Different classes are also able to sprint for different lengths of time than others, and have different amounts of body armour. Support and Assault classes can sprint for 8 seconds. The Anti-Tank class can sprint for 9 seconds. All other classes can sprint for 10 seconds.

For the specific kits assigned to forces on each side, see Battlefield 2 Infantry Classes.

Patches

There have been a number of patches made available since the release of Battlefield 2.

The latest patch version is 1.12, and is required to play multiplayer games on most online servers. Patch 1.12 was released alongside Battlefield 2: Special Forces. This is a compatibility patch which mainly allows current Battlefield 2 players to retain their ranks while playing Special Forces, and also to allow the use of weapons unlocked from the original Battlefield 2 in Special Forces.

Patch 1.2 is currently in private beta testing, administered through DICE's relationships with some of the larger pay-to-play leagues.

Total Conversion Mods (not Mini-Mods) for Battlefield 2 that have been released include:. Complaints notwithstanding, the nano sold its first 1 million units in only 17 days[13] and has driven Apple to a record billion-dollar profit for 2005. Mods that are known to be in development for Battlefield 2 include:. [12]. Patch 1.2 is currently in private beta testing, administered through DICE's relationships with some of the larger pay-to-play leagues. Hesseldahl dismissed them as "stupid" and suggested that they benefitted "no one but the trial lawyers," but also suggested that Apple could have avoided litigation by offering "full refunds on unwanted nanos" instead of charging a re-stocking fee and lengthening the return period from 14 (if bought online) or 10 (if bought at retail) to 30 or 60 days. This is a compatibility patch which mainly allows current Battlefield 2 players to retain their ranks while playing Special Forces, and also to allow the use of weapons unlocked from the original Battlefield 2 in Special Forces. Some commentators such as BusinessWeek's Arik Hesseldahl have criticized the lawsuits.

Patch 1.12 was released alongside Battlefield 2: Special Forces. Similar lawsuits were later filed in Mexico and the United Kingdom [11]. The latest patch version is 1.12, and is required to play multiplayer games on most online servers. Lawyers for the plaintiffs claim that the devices "scratch excessively during normal usage, rendering the screen on the nanos unreadable, and violating state consumer protection statutes" [10]. There have been a number of patches made available since the release of Battlefield 2. In October 2005, a class action lawsuit was filed against Apple, with the plaintiffs seeking reimbursement for the device, legal fees, and "unlawful or illegal profits" from sales of the iPod nano. To unlock these weapons, the player must have the Special Forces expansion pack. Apple have now started shipping iPod nanos with a protective sleeve to protect them from scratches.

For the specific kits assigned to forces on each side, see Battlefield 2 Infantry Classes. On September 27, Apple confirmed a small percentage ("less than 1/10 of 1 percent") of iPod nanos shipped with a faulty screen and agreed to replace any nanos with cracked screens, but denied the iPod nano was more susceptible to scratching than prior iPods [9]. All other classes can sprint for 10 seconds. Other owners reported that their nano's screen cracked with no provocation [8]. The Anti-Tank class can sprint for 9 seconds. Within days of the nano's release, some users reported damage to the nano, suggesting that the LCD screen had become so scratched that it was unreadable. Support and Assault classes can sprint for 8 seconds. Analysts see this as part of the corporate culture of Apple, which relies heavily upon innovating to continue appealing to consumers.

Different classes are also able to sprint for different lengths of time than others, and have different amounts of body armour. Steve Jobs has argued that the iPod nano is a necessary risk since competitors are beginning to catch up to the iPod mini in terms of design and features, and believes the iPod nano will prove to be even more popular and successful than the iPod mini. Once unlocked, non-ranked servers can allow or disallow (server side) players from using the weapons they have unlocked on ranked servers. The mini was not only Apple's most popular MP3 player, it was still the world's best-selling player up to the end of its lifespan and sales of the mini did not appear to be slowing down. On ranked servers, the players must earn points and become promoted to a higher rank in order to unlock a weapon of their choice (one per kit) if they wish to use them. Apple's release of the iPod nano as a replacement for the iPod mini is viewed by many as a risky move. For instance, snipers may choose the more powerful M95 sniper rifle (firing .50 BMG ammunition), and Spec Ops can use a H&K G36C carbine instead of the M4 Carbine. However a day later, analyst firm Piper Jaffray, reported that the iPod nano was "selling well", with a survey of 20 Apple Stores showing that they had all sold out of their 4 GB black stock [7].

After many points are earned, players can unlock alternate weapons for each class. AppleInsider's own investigation found that two of the Apple Stores in California had only sold a few hundred iPod nanos, out of a stock of over 1400, by Saturday September 10 [6]. All classes carry a basic pistol and combat knife, and Spec Ops, Engineer, Support, Medic, and Assault (with unlocked weapon) classes spawn with hand grenades. According to American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu, after one week of sales, iPod nano sales were generally lower than expected with only the 4 GB black model selling strongly. Battlefield 2 players can pick from seven basic classes:. The initial consumer response to the iPod nano was overwhelmingly positive and sales were heavy [5]. MEC versus USMC. [4].

China versus USMC. In fact, there remains available real estate on the motherboard. Also, several maps are not available for single-player, such as the "Kubra Dam" map. Apple opted for the higher cost 0603 (0.6 x 0.3mm) components, the latest surface mount technology, as opposed to cheaper but larger 1005 (1.0 x 0.5mm) components. Single-player mode only allows access to the former, to the extent that purchasers who are unable or unwilling to play online have no built-in access to many of the game's vehicles, therefore the true value of the game is to play it online. The cost of 2GB NAND flash memory is about JPY14000. With more players, 2 new bases open up, spawning fighter aircraft and helicopters. Japanese engineers estimated the component cost of the 2GB nano as between JPY22000 and JPY27000, which is high compared to the retail price of JPY21800.

For example, when "Gulf of Oman" is played with only 16 people, it is an infantry and armor combat scenario with 4 objectives to capture. This design, however, increases the number of electronic components and increases the cost. Depending on the number of people the server is configured to accommodate, the scope and objectives of maps change. The iPod nano uses general-purpose integrated circuits (IC) instead of smaller, low cost custom developed chips, possibly to reduce time-to-market. BF2 originally shipped with 12 maps, with Wake Island 2007 being added from the 1.03 patch onwards. Apple has also said that, unlike other iPods capable of storing photos, the iPod nano will not work with either Apple's iPod Camera Connector or any camera connectors from third-party manufacturers [3]. However, some servers allow users to use the unlockable weapons without achieving the standard requirements. It also lacks the TV-out and voice recording options of the larger iPods.

On most servers, the demo limits kits to the stock weapons. However, since the removal of the remote connector from the main iPod line, manufacturers have been forced to develop alternatives to accessories that used it, many of which are compatible with the iPod nano. The 64-person version is unavailable in the demo, though up to 64 players can still play on the 32-person map. The lack of the remote connector found on the top of the iPod mini and Generations 3 and 4 of the iPod meant that a number of third-party accessories will not work with the iPod nano. the 32-person version has a time limit of 12 minutes. Unlike all previous iPods, Apple is not offering an optional FireWire cable for the iPod nano (nor the fifth generation iPod). The 16-person version of the map has a time limit of 10 minutes. Also, the iPod nano has a lack of connectivity options.

A demo is available for download from major game sites featuring a single map ("Gulf of Oman") for both single-player and multi-player. The iPod nano offers less storage capacity than the iPod mini for the same price. A console version with a similar theme also exists, named Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, although the game is quite different in execution and gameplay than the PC version. Testing by technology-enthusiast website Ars Technica has shown that even after being driven over twice by a car, the unit's screen was damaged but that it could still play music.[2]. Battlefield 2 was originally scheduled to be released on March 20, 2005, but was delayed until June 23, 2005 for North America, and June 25, 2005 for Europe and Australia. As a result, it has no moving parts, making it immune to skipping and far more durable than disk-based players. The various forces still use the trademark feature of the Battlefield series - the large stable of vehicles that any player, regardless of faction, specialty or experience, can climb into and control. The iPod nano uses flash memory instead of a hard disk.

Apple also released some accessories, including armbands and silicone "tubes" (possibly a play on "nanotubes") designed to bring color to the nano and protect it from scratches, as well as a combination lanyard-earphone accessory that hangs around the neck, and avoids the problem of tangling earphone cords. The battles, however, only feature USMC versus MEC and USMC versus China. The nano was launched in two colors (black or white) with two available sizes: 2GB (roughly 500 songs) for $199 USD and 4GB (1000 songs) for $249 USD. The game portrays a hypothetical war in the near future between three powerful factions: the United States Marines Corps (USMC), China's People's Liberation Army, and the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition (MEC). It was also the first iPod to include a new lyrics screen, modifiable using iTunes. . There is also a combination lock feature that makes use of the click wheel to lock the iPod, and serves to secure the user's calendar and contact information.

Both games take place in modern times and, after the acquisition of Desert Combat developer Trauma Studios by Digital Illusions CE (DICE), developers that worked on Desert Combat went to work on Battlefield 2. The iPod nano includes a stop watch and a multiple time zone clock function. Battlefield 2 is often compared to the popular Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942. Although it uses the same connection of Apple's FireWire iPod Cable and can charge its battery over FireWire, the iPod nano does not support synchronizing over a FireWire connection. The game received an aggregate score of 90% from reviewers and topped the PC game sales charts from June to August 2005. It connects through the same proprietary dock connector as the third generation iPod, the fourth generation iPod, and the iPod mini, using a USB 2.0 port on the user's computer. With a mixture of strategy and FPS elements, it utilizes a new engine for gameplay, physics, and graphics, as well as other functions. The iPod nano works with iTunes on Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows (third party software is available for platforms that Apple do not support).

It is a sequel in the Electronic Arts Battlefield franchise, and was released in late June of 2005 to both critical and popular success. The screen is 176 x 132 pixels (maximum pixel count of 23,232), 1.5 inches diagonal, and can display 65,536 colors (16-bit color). Although the game was made primarily for internet play, it also includes a singleplayer mode with three difficulty levels. Its stated battery life is 14 hours. Battlefield 2 is a computer game in which up to 64 players, over the internet, fight in a modern battlefield using contemporary firearms and vehicles. Advertising emphasizes the iPod nano's small size: it is 0.27 inches (6.9 mm) thick, 1.6 inches (40 mm) wide, and 3.5 inches (90 mm) long and weighs 1.5 ounces (42 grams). Internet or Network (2-64 players). The surface of the click wheel is slightly rough, allowing greater tactile feedback for out-of-sight operation [1].

Multiplayer requires 1 set of discs per PC and a broadband (Cable, DSL, or a faster) connection. The battery and other internal parts were also reduced in size. ATI Radeon 8500, 9600 or greater. The screen also has a higher resolution than the old grayscale iPod, allowing one more line of text than the mini's screen. NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 or greater. The iPod nano has more flash memory storage than is used in the iPod shuffle and has a miniaturized version of the color screen and click wheel found on the full-sized iPods. Video card must have 128 MB or more memory and one of the following chipsets:

. Work on development of the new design of the iPod nano started only nine months prior to the launch date.
