It is slated to be released on DVD and on a UMD disc for the PSP handheld console. Its official theatrical release date was on September 10, 2005 as the grand public opening. It was released in Japan on September 14, 2005, and the release dates for North America, Europe, Australia, and other countries are TBA. The movie received the Honorary Maria Award at the Festival Internacional de Cinema de Cataluña on October 15, 2005. The official Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children website placed a countdown, showing the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds until the final release. However, due to the release date being pushed back several times, the timer was removed. Special Editions of this movie have been released, including the Ultimate Edition "Advent Pieces: Limited", which includes the OVA Last Order: Final Fantasy VII. This was the first announced title in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. The film's soundtrack, scored by Nobuo Uematsu, was released on September 28, 2005. PlotSpoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
Two years after the events of Final Fantasy VII, the Planet has begun healing itself from the devastating attack from Meteor, but a strange disease known as "Geostigma" ("Seikon-Shoukougun" or Star Scar Syndrome in Japanese version) has arisen. It is proving to be fatal, and children seem to be at greater risk. Cloud Strife, who is also infected with the disease, has secluded himself from the world, still haunted by Aerith Gainsborough's death. However, he has established his own delivery service with the aide of Tifa Lockhart. He had lived with her along with Barret Wallace and Marlene Wallace for a while in their newly recontructed bar, 7th Heaven in the city of Edge. Tifa's bar is now an orphanage for the infected children. While Barrett is away to settle his past, Marlene Wallace, Barrett's adopted daughter, is entrusted to the care of Tifa. With them is a boy named Denzel, who Cloud, Tifa, and Marlene have taken in as their own. The survivors of Midgar have begun to build a new home on the edge of the city, aptly named 'Edge'. In the center is a monument to Midgar's destruction - Meteor. The president of the former Shin-Ra company, Rufus Shinra, is confined to a wheelchair, due to the energy draining effects of geostigma. He is coordinating searches by the Turks for the effects that Sephiroth had left on the planet. Three unknown figures appear and begin searching for Jenova's remains to complete the Reunion. The leader of the trio, Kadaj, claims that Geostigma is due to the Jenova cells corrupting the Lifestream. He somewhat knows Cloud, referring to him as "brother" and "traitor," most likely due to the fact that, though they are both "bound" by Jenova and Geostigma, Cloud is trying to stop Kadaj and his crew rather than embrace their efforts to further the virus. Vincent Valentine suspects that the trio is seeking to obtain the remains of Jenova to create another Sephiroth, and suggests that Geostigma is the result of Lifestream inside one's body battling the Jenova cells within it. Tifa and Marlene go looking for Cloud at the church where Aerith spent time and grew her flowers, and where Cloud has apparently been living. It is here they discover that Cloud has Geostigma and does not have the will to fight it. Loz arrives at the church, attacking Tifa while searching for the location of Jenova. After a hard fought battle, Tifa is knocked unconscious, and Loz kidnaps Marlene and steals Cloud's materia. Cloud returns to the church where he discovers Tifa unconscious and his materia stolen, and collapses next to Tifa due to the effects his Geostigma. They are found by the Turks Reno and Rude who bring them back to 7th Heaven. Tifa fighting Loz in Aerith's church. The three members of Kadaj's gang begin kidnapping the children who are infected with Geostigma, including Denzel. They take the children to the Forgotten Capital, Ajit, where Kadaj tries to persuade them that the planet is inflicting this disease upon them and that they should rally together against the planet. He then walks into the very lake where Aerith was laid to rest two years prior, and as he does so, corrupts it, turning it black. He takes a drink and tells the children to follow suit. They do, entering a trance-like state, the pupils of their eyes becoming narrow slits like those of Kadaj. As it gets late, Tifa wakes up, finding Cloud staring out the window. She confronts him about his Geostigma, asking him if he wants to die alone. Cloud does not answer, which clearly frustrates Tifa. Reno and Rude return, telling Cloud and Tifa that Kadaj has taken the children to The Forgotten City of Ajit. On his way, riding on his motorcycle Fenrir, Cloud has a vision of Aerith, standing back-to-back with him in a field of flowers. She puts a hand gently on his arm, asking him why exactly he came. Cloud hangs his head and asks to be forgiven, but Aerith just giggles and asks "By whom?" Cloud tries to turn around to face her, but the vision ends. Suddenly, he is confronted by a hail of gunfire. Kadaj "controls" the children, using them as a human shield, and making them surround Cloud, ensuring that he cannot escape. Kadaj begins calling him a "traitor" and is about to execute him when Marlene calls out Cloud's name, distracting Kadaj and allowing Cloud to grab his sword. During the battle of one VS three, Cloud performs his limit break "Blade Beam" against the "Quake" magic attack from Loz. This leads to a battle, in which Cloud is defeated by the three, but saved by Vincent Valentine. Vincent says he had also saved Tseng and Elena by nursing them back to health after they had been tortured by Kadaj's gang. After having a discussion about their current situation, Marlene comes and yells at Cloud when he says he wants to back down from fighting again. It is here Cloud has a another flashback of what happened prior to arriving to the Forgotten Capital. Rude tells them that the children have been taken to Ajit. Hesitating, Cloud decides instead to go talk to Rufus. Tifa has obviously had it with Cloud, and lectures him, speaking her thoughts about how he is pained by past failures, and how he always wants to be alone. She pauses and says, "Have we lost to our memories?" Cloud just hangs his head and says, "But...we just let her die." Aerith's voice is then heard, suggesting to Cloud that he should forgive himself instead of drifting away. As the flashback ends, he asks Vincent if his sin can be forgiven. Vincent just replies that he had never tried. This slightly confuses Cloud, but he says he'll give it a try and let Vincent know how it goes. Hand in hand with Marlene, they head back to the city.
A sort of nostalgic scene ensues when the other Final Fantasy VII party members (Barrett, Red XIII, Cait Sith, Yuffie, Cid, and Vincent) show up at this point to battle Ex-Bahamut, as Tifa protects the possessed Denzel. Denzel awakens from his zombie-like state after Denzel and Tifa are knocked unconscious from one of Bahmut's blasts. The members each protect them in turn, finally with the arrival of Cloud on Fenrir. Cloud tells Tifa that he returned Marlene to the bar, and that the sin feels lighter, to which she smiles. Denzel then says he'll go back to the bar too, asking Cloud if he'll return. Cloud nods as the boy turns to run back to the bar. Bahamut wreaks havoc on the newly constructed Edge until Cloud joins in. At first, Cloud performs his limit break "Braver" to hit Bahamut down the ground. But, "Braver" is not powerful enough to defeat Bahamut. With the help of the entire party boosting Cloud into the sky toward Bahamut, Cloud has a vision Aerith reaching out to him, helping to get Cloud through Bahamut's largest attack. He takes her hand, and she gives him the strength he needs to push through. With that, he goes through Bahamut's Mega Flare and finally takes it down using his Limit Break "Climhazzard". Meanwhile, Rufus reveals to Kadaj that he really isn't as weak as he was leading everyone to believe, jumping out of the wheel chair and throwing off the white blanket he had been wearing. He also reveals the remains of Jenova that is sealed in a black box, which he had been hiding on his lap under the blanket. He tosses it off the edge of the building, and in a blind rage Kadaj fires a materia blast at Rufus. Surprisingly, Rufus easily dodges it, and in the process he loses the bandages covering his head and allows himself to fall of the ledge. He then quickly pulls out his shotgun out from his jacket, and begins to fire at the gas pipe above Kadaj's head. Kadaj leaps off the exploding buidling in order to try and save the box from hitting the ground. Rufus changes his target to the falling Jenova container. After a few missed shots, he manages to hit the box, causing its contents to spill. Kadaj still manages to retrieve it but doesn't know it has been hit. Rufus is then saved by Tseng and Elena, who quickly shoot nets to break Rufus' fall. Before Kadaj can celebrate, he notices Cloud is hot on his tail. There is a chase scene on a partially constructed highway, where Loz and Yazoo both try and stall Cloud, who fail due to a timely arrival of Reno and Rude. Rude had made a "refinement of Shinra technology," AKA strapping a bunch of TNT and fireworks together, which detonates and damages Loz and Yazoo. A duel on the cycles gives Kadaj a head start, and slashes at Cloud's infected arm. He removes his sleeve to reveal a pink ribbon which all of the party members have tied to their arms. Its speculated that this is a sign of their friendship and also to show their grief for Aerith's death. Cloud manages to catch up to Kadaj in the Church, where Kadaj tries to attack Cloud with magic. He misses, but hits the still blooming flower garden. Water wells up from the created hole and rises into the air, both physically harming Kadaj and healing Cloud of his Geostigma. A drop of water falls and Aerith's voice is heard, softly encouraging him "Let's go, Cloud". This rain water is thought to be Aerith's final limit break, Great Gospel. Cloud continues to pursue Kadaj, and confronts him again in a one on one battle, which is almost cut short due to the rest of the party arriving in the Sierra, Cid Highwind's new airship. He had named it after his assistant Sierra (Shera in English localizations). However, Tifa and Vincent manage to convince everyone not to interfere, because this is Cloud's fight. Vincent reveals that Kadaj is in fact a "Larva" of Sephiroth, meaning that one day he would turn into Sephiroth. The Sierra flies off, which puts a small smile to Cloud's face, before he finally defeats Kadaj with his other Limit Break, Finishing Touch. Kadaj drops his sword and falls from the building. Kadaj hangs from the edge of a building with one hand, with Cloud standing above him. However, instead of admitting defeat, Kadaj throws the container containing Jenova's remains Cloud, who slices it open out of reaction, allwoing Kadaj to absorb the contents as he falls. Cloud jumps down after him, and tries to finish him with one strike, but Kadaj stops him by raising his hands and instantly transforms into Sephiroth while the Masamune forms in his grasp at the point of Cloud's impact. (background music changes to Sairin: Katayoku no Tenshi, a reprised, rock-orchestra version of One-Winged Angel) Sephiroth reveals to Cloud that the spirits of people who died with Geostigma would stain the planet, thus allowing him to control it. He would use it to travel the stars until he finds another planet to crash into, just like Jenova did. An awesome fight scene follows, and Cloud battles Sephiroth for some time, including performing "Cross Slash" against him, but Sephiroth successfully dodged it. Sephiroth commenting that Cloud has become stronger. Sephiroth tires Cloud to exhaustion, and as Cloud collapses on a wall, Sephiroth stabs him below the shoulder. He asks Cloud what is most important to him, so that he can have the pleasure of destroying it. Scenes of Aerith, Zack, Tifa, Marlene, and Denzel are flashed by. Cloud removes Sephiroth's blade from his shoulder, and states, "I pity you who understands nothing." Sephiroth leaps into the air and Cloud declares, "There's nothing that isn't important to me!" right before he leaps into the air, separating his sword into six pieces and performs a new Limit Break (Translates to " Omnislash Version 5," a variation of Cloud's infamous ultimate Limit Break from Final Fantasy VII. The new limit break consists of him manifesting 6 swords and dashing through Sephiroth with each one.) to defeat Sephiroth. The defeated Sephiroth floats over Cloud with a newly formed single black-feathered wing. Cloud says, "Stay there for me, trapped in memories" Sephiroth just smiles and replies, "I won't just be a memory..." before his wing wraps around him and crumbles, revealing a wasted away Kadaj. Kadaj, dying in Cloud's arms, hears the voice of Aerith, telling him to return home. Mistaking Aerith for "mother", he makes the motion of reaching out to the sky, and joyfully returns to the Lifestream, leaving Cloud behind, victorious. It begins raining. Scenes are shown throughout Edge of the sick children with Geostigma being cured with this rain, a large scale version of Great Gospel. Rufus is shown in an alley, sitting in his wheelchair, surrounded by Elena, Tseng, Rude, and Reno, and is also cured by the healing rain. The party onboard the Sierra are shown celebrating. A drop of water catches Tifa's eye, and she looks up, smiling. She says (referring to Aerith) "You were with us all along, weren't you? Thank you." As Cloud stands in the rain, smiling, he is suddenly shot from behind by Yazoo, who along with Loz, has survived the Turks' blast (although they too are being taken by the purifying water). Cloud rises up again, ready for one last go. He turns, his lips distorted into a snarl as he charges them, scraping his sword on the roof of the building. Loz and Yazoo raise their hands, a blue aura surrounding both of their arms, and as Cloud makes his swing, they unleash a final blast, and the explosion covers the entire roof. Seeing the area where Cloud was fighting explode, the crew onboard the Sierra react in shock, and Tifa calls out to Cloud. Denzel and Marlene are shown in Tifa's bar holding hands and looking out the window, Denzel asking "Cloud is coming back...right?" Lying in a blank expanse, Aerith puts her hand on Cloud's forehead. Cloud calls out, "Mother?" Aerith then replies "Again? I wonder how many times I've been called 'Mother' today?" Zack, seeing this, asks Aerith "Isn't it nice to be yearned for?" Finally, he explains to Cloud that his place isn't here with them, and that he must return home. Aerith and Zack saying goodbye to Cloud. He awakens in Aerith's church in Sector 5, surrounded by his friends and the children. He cures Denzel, the last child with Geostigma, by bringing him into the newly formed pool in the middle of the church and pouring some water on Denzel's head. It is here where Cloud smiles for the first time in the movie. He then looks up and scans the church, doing a doubletake when he sees Aerith crouching by two children. Everything else stops. His eyes widen and his mouth falls open slightly. Aerith stands up and walks to the door, where Zack is leaning. Knowing he is alright now, Aerith turns back and smiles at Cloud, revealing her face for the first time in the movie. She and Zack walk out the door and into the light, finally at peace. Cloud watches them leave, smiles, and says, "Yeah... I'm... not alone." Bonus endingA small cutscene is shown after the main credits to "Calling" by Kyosuke Himuro. This scene features images of Cloud travelling on his motorcycle, Fenrir, through various landscapes. As the song reaches its climax, a flower field is shown that Cloud appears to be approaching and the camera pans out to show Aerith standing in this field. We see her at first from the side, but she turns her head eventually to face the camera, and, many speculate, to face Cloud. Cloud rides further into the horizon towards the flower field, smiling. The last scene shows Cloud's desk at 7th Heaven filled with postcards, letters and photographs of the places he has visited. A close up of his desk is shown with a new photograph of him and the AVALANCHE crew together (notable because the picture that was originally shown, only showed Tifa, Marlene, Denzel, and on the side; the new picture implies that Cloud is holding on to his new happiness) and a small bouquet of flowers (from the field shown earlier) laid in front of it. On the Way to a SmileThere is a small series of stories taking place between the time Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Written by Kazushige Nojima, they are being released in episodes on the Japanese Advent Children website, and are currently only in Japanese. Various fan translations are available online. Case of Denzel One day Denzel shows up in Johnny's store to have a private meeting with Reeve Tuetsi. He is interviewing to become part of Reeve's new World Restoration Order, an army devoted to rebuilding the Planet. Denzel then goes on to tell his story of how he became an orphan, the events of that fateful day in which the Lifestream emerged to save the Planet from Meteor, when he got Geostigma, and how came into the care of Tifa, Cloud, and Marlene. Case of Tifa GeostigmaGeostigma is a term used to describe the illness plaguing the inhabitants of the film world of Advent Children. What geostigma is exactly was widely speculated upon amongst fans of the game prior to the film's release; however, in the movie it was revealed geostigma is actually the negative side-effects of one's body overexerting itself in an attempt to purge Jenova's cells from within. After Cloud and company defeat Sephiroth and Jenova inside the Northern Crater in Final Fantasy VII, Jenova's cells are distributed within the Lifestream. It is explained that the body itself has a Lifestream born of the larger Lifestream encompassing the planet. The Lifestream gives life by breaking itself into smaller streams allowing people to live. Once the body dies, the stream within the body reconvenes with the larger stream, bringing back knowledge and information. This is also how materia/magic is made (since the Lifestream has infinite knowledge, in a concentrated form the knowledge is used as magic for living beings). Once implanted within the Lifestream and once the Lifestream breached the Planet's surface during the ending of Final Fantasy VII, Jenova's cells are distributed to the surface populace. Once Jenova's cells are erradicated through the healing power of Aerith's Great Gospel, the illness is cured. Release informationOriginally, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was scheduled for a September dual-release in both Japan and North America, with Japan obtaining a special release of the DVD with more extras and collectable offers than the US release (which is the norm in Japan where rabid Otaku are known to pay more for collectables and there is a defined market for these items.) The official website for the English version of Advent Children even had a countdown clock to the release of the DVD. But days before the United States release, Square Enix changed the date to November 2005, in a move that would indicate that Square Enix was trying to release the DVD during the lucrative holiday sales times. The time was changed again in early November to a January release date (with initial confusion given that many retail outlets got different release dates and information that didn't match), with a limited theatrical run before the release of the DVD. Fans have pointed out that the idea is a questionable one, given the track record of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, which bankrupted Square Pictures after the movie made a substantial loss. Currently there is no known date for when Advent Children will be released in the North American market, though many online retailers, mostly those specializing in sale of anime dvd titles, list March 28, 2006 as the most common unconfirmed release date. In an article for the website The Digital Bits, it was hinted that the movie is at least on track to be released by the end of 2006. It was mentioned that it is taking extra time in completing the bonus supplements. [2] Due to the delay, many fans have resorted to downloading fansubs over BitTorrent and/or importing the Japanese R2 version in order to watch the film. CreditsCharacters and Voice actorsVoice actors (English)It is widely speculated by fans that the characters that appeared in Kingdom Hearts will be voiced by the actors who voiced them in that game. It is also believed that a lack of appropriate English voice actors is the cause of the significant delay of the American, British, and Australian releases of the movie. Square-Enix's reluctance to release the names of any voice actors is evidence of this. Walter Roberts was the narrator in E3 2004 and Steamboy trailers (according to iMDB). Also Wally Wingert confirmed that he would play Rufus on his webpage. Walter Roberts was the narrator in E3 2004 and Steamboy trailers (according to iMDB). The police department identified Jones as the son of Stanley Tookie Williams. Square-Enix's reluctance to release the names of any voice actors is evidence of this. At his funeral, the last words of Williams echoed from a tape played to mourners, whom he asked to spread a message to loved ones:. This story was never released in English, which led to many fan-based sites to do their own translating [1]. [50] It is planned that Williams' body will be cremated and his ashes will be sent to South Africa for scattering. It helps to uncover some of the mysteries around the beginning of the movie, and its location. Williams' funeral filled the 1,500 seat Bethel AME church and drew a wide variety of people from current gang members to celebrities and religious leaders. Case of Tifa He is interviewing to become part of Reeve's new World Restoration Order, an army devoted to rebuilding the Planet. Williams' body was laid out for viewing on 19 December 2005. One day Denzel shows up in Johnny's store to have a private meeting with Reeve Tuetsi. An archived copy of a Maura Dolan's Los Angeles Times November 29 article on the history of Becnel's efforts on behalf of Williams can be found here [48]. However, her attention is mostly focused on caring for the children orphaned by the many recent tragedies. [47]. Many started going to Tifa's new 7th Heaven, also rebuilt in Edge, because they saw her as something of a feature attraction. Williams’ spokeswoman and co-author, Barbara Becnel, said shortly after Williams's death that she is "now on a mission." [46] "That mission is one: to obtain justice for Stanley Tookie Williams by proving beyond a shadow of a doubt his innocence, (and) continuing to preserve the incredibly remarkable legacy of this man who personifies redemption." Williams directed Becnel to receive his body, and Becnel began making the funeral arrangements. Impressed by Tifa's decisiveness as to how to get on with life while everyone else still seemed at a loss, Johnny would start telling his customers stories about how wonderful Tifa was, and soon he lost business because of it. So take care.”. Johnny, the bumbling regular of Tifa's 7th Heaven bar from the original game, has opened up his own bar in the newly built city of Edge. So with that, I am grateful….I say to you and everyone else, God bless. Case of Denzel Written by Kazushige Nojima, they are being released in episodes on the Japanese Advent Children website, and are currently only in Japanese. It's accessible for everybody. There is a small series of stories taking place between the time Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. And it doesn't -- is not predicated on color or race or social stratum or one's religious background. That's how I would like my legacy to be remembered as: a redemptive transition, something that I believe is not exclusive just for the so-called sanctimonious, the elitists. The last scene shows Cloud's desk at 7th Heaven filled with postcards, letters and photographs of the places he has visited. And I say to you and all those who can listen and will listen that redemption is tailor-made for the wretched, and that's what I used to be….That's what I would like the world to remember me. Cloud rides further into the horizon towards the flower field, smiling. So, therefore, I just stand strong and continue to tell you, your audience and the world that I am innocent and, yes, I have been a wretched person, but I have redeemed myself. We see her at first from the side, but she turns her head eventually to face the camera, and, many speculate, to face Cloud. This is pure faith, and predicated on my redemption. As the song reaches its climax, a flower field is shown that Cloud appears to be approaching and the camera pans out to show Aerith standing in this field. It has nothing to do with machismo, with manhood, or with some pseudo former gang street code. This scene features images of Cloud travelling on his motorcycle, Fenrir, through various landscapes. In an interview [45] on WBAI Pacifica radio hours before the execution, however, he had this to say: “[M]y lack of fear of this barbaric methodology of death, I rely upon my faith. A small cutscene is shown after the main credits to "Calling" by Kyosuke Himuro. [44] At the time of his execution, he provided no last words to the prison warden. not alone.". Williams requested no last meal and consumed only milk and oatmeal throughout the day. I'm.. [43]. Cloud watches them leave, smiles, and says, "Yeah.. Adam Housley, a reporter for Fox News, described the experience as "choreographed", "sterile", and "clinical". She and Zack walk out the door and into the light, finally at peace. Lora Owens appeared very upset, according to MSNBC anchor Rita Cosby. Knowing he is alright now, Aerith turns back and smiles at Cloud, revealing her face for the first time in the movie. Members of Albert Owens' family who witnessed the execution were described as stony-faced. Aerith stands up and walks to the door, where Zack is leaning. He talked with his guards throughout the process. His eyes widen and his mouth falls open slightly. Williams apparently exchanged many glances with his supporters. Everything else stops. Witnesses described a somber mood in the execution chamber. He then looks up and scans the church, doing a doubletake when he sees Aerith crouching by two children. Fagan later wrote a detailed description [42] of the execution. It is here where Cloud smiles for the first time in the movie. And most strikingly at the end of the execution, as those three were heading out, they yelled, “The State of California just killed an innocent man!” which is the first time I ever heard any outburst in the death chamber there.". He cures Denzel, the last child with Geostigma, by bringing him into the newly formed pool in the middle of the church and pouring some water on Denzel's head. We could see them, and throughout the last part of the execution -- or preparing him when he was still conscious, they gave what looked like black power salutes several times to him, one man and two women. He awakens in Aerith's church in Sector 5, surrounded by his friends and the children. Becnel was among them, I understand. The most notable thing was that Williams had supporters at the back of the room… Ms. Lying in a blank expanse, Aerith puts her hand on Cloud's forehead. A reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, Kevin Fagan said, "This is the sixth one I have seen here at San Quentin, and I have to say this was very different. Denzel and Marlene are shown in Tifa's bar holding hands and looking out the window, Denzel asking "Cloud is coming back...right?". He kept them on, and he kept looking…". Seeing the area where Cloud was fighting explode, the crew onboard the Sierra react in shock, and Tifa calls out to Cloud. He had his glasses on the whole time. Loz and Yazoo raise their hands, a blue aura surrounding both of their arms, and as Cloud makes his swing, they unleash a final blast, and the explosion covers the entire roof. Added Contra Costa Times reporter John Simerman, "They had some trouble with the second I.V., which was in the left arm… Williams, at one point, grimaced or looked almost out of frustration… at the difficulty there…. He turns, his lips distorted into a snarl as he charges them, scraping his sword on the roof of the building. [41]. Cloud rises up again, ready for one last go. The process which should take only a few minutes instead took about 20 minutes. As Cloud stands in the rain, smiling, he is suddenly shot from behind by Yazoo, who along with Loz, has survived the Turks' blast (although they too are being taken by the purifying water). According to CNN, the staff had difficulty inserting the needles. She says (referring to Aerith) "You were with us all along, weren't you? Thank you.". An unnamed reporter at the execution said that Williams showed no resistance, neither when he came into the chamber shortly after midnight, nor after he was strapped onto the gurney. A drop of water catches Tifa's eye, and she looks up, smiling. Their description is as follows: [40]. The party onboard the Sierra are shown celebrating. PST (08:35 UTC), several reporters who witnessed the execution held a news conference. Rufus is shown in an alley, sitting in his wheelchair, surrounded by Elena, Tseng, Rude, and Reno, and is also cured by the healing rain. After Williams was declared dead at 12:35 a.m. Scenes are shown throughout Edge of the sick children with Geostigma being cured with this rain, a large scale version of Great Gospel. He was the 12th person executed by the state since California reinstated the death penalty in 1977. It begins raining. Newsweek reported [39] thousands of protesters outside, most asking for clemency. Mistaking Aerith for "mother", he makes the motion of reaching out to the sky, and joyfully returns to the Lifestream, leaving Cloud behind, victorious. After exhausting all forms of appeal, Williams was executed by lethal injection at San Quentin State Prison, California, on December 13, 2005. Kadaj, dying in Cloud's arms, hears the voice of Aerith, telling him to return home. [38]. Cloud says, "Stay there for me, trapped in memories" Sephiroth just smiles and replies, "I won't just be a memory..." before his wing wraps around him and crumbles, revealing a wasted away Kadaj. Williams about an escape plan which involved the killing of a bus driver and another accomplice. The defeated Sephiroth floats over Cloud with a newly formed single black-feathered wing. Prosecutors had cited handwritten notes written by Mr. The new limit break consists of him manifesting 6 swords and dashing through Sephiroth with each one.) to defeat Sephiroth. Williams.". Oglesby told Von Ellerman that he was using the documents to testify against Williams and others "to obtain a reduction or eliminate charges against him." Von Ellerman also observed Oglesby copying from samples of Williams' handwriting "to create incriminating documents that would appear to be written by Mr. Scenes of Aerith, Zack, Tifa, Marlene, and Denzel are flashed by. Mr. He asks Cloud what is most important to him, so that he can have the pleasure of destroying it. He states that he had observed his cellmate George Oglesby receive police reports on Williams and others from the Sheriff's department. Sephiroth tires Cloud to exhaustion, and as Cloud collapses on a wall, Sephiroth stabs him below the shoulder. It included reference to an affidavit by Gordon Bradbury von Ellerman attesting to belief in Williams' innocence and dated December 10 [36] states that he called the NAACP on December 8 after reading that date in the Daily Breeze [37] that his cellmate, George Oglesby, had testified against Williams. Sephiroth commenting that Cloud has become stronger. That same day, Jonathan Harris, a New York counsel with Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP, filed a response [35], summarizing new evidence of innocence. An awesome fight scene follows, and Cloud battles Sephiroth for some time, including performing "Cross Slash" against him, but Sephiroth successfully dodged it. Schwarzenegger summarized by basing his denial of clemency on the "totality of circumstances." (Summary – Details in PDF format). He would use it to travel the stars until he finds another planet to crash into, just like Jenova did. In his denial, Schwarzenegger cited the following:. Sephiroth reveals to Cloud that the spirits of people who died with Geostigma would stain the planet, thus allowing him to control it. On December 12, 2005, Schwarzenegger denied clemency for Williams. (background music changes to Sairin: Katayoku no Tenshi, a reprised, rock-orchestra version of One-Winged Angel). Williams work." [34]. Cloud jumps down after him, and tries to finish him with one strike, but Kadaj stops him by raising his hands and instantly transforms into Sephiroth while the Masamune forms in his grasp at the point of Cloud's impact. This position of peace would honor my husband's memory and Mr. However, instead of admitting defeat, Kadaj throws the container containing Jenova's remains Cloud, who slices it open out of reaction, allwoing Kadaj to absorb the contents as he falls. Williams to join me in sending a message to all communities that we should all unite in peace. Kadaj hangs from the edge of a building with one hand, with Cloud standing above him. I invite Mr. Kadaj drops his sword and falls from the building. Williams' peace initiative. The Sierra flies off, which puts a small smile to Cloud's face, before he finally defeats Kadaj with his other Limit Break, Finishing Touch. By contrast, on December 9, 2005, Linda Owens, Albert Owens' widow, issued a statement in support of Williams’ efforts to bring an end to gang violence and his call for peace between gangs: "I, Linda Owens want to build upon Mr. Vincent reveals that Kadaj is in fact a "Larva" of Sephiroth, meaning that one day he would turn into Sephiroth. [33]. However, Tifa and Vincent manage to convince everyone not to interfere, because this is Cloud's fight. On December 8, 2005, Lora Owens, the stepmother of Albert Owens, one of the victims, made a statement expressing her opinion of Stanley Williams: "I think he [Williams] is the same cold-blooded killer that he was then and he would be now if he had the opportunity again." [32] Owens' two daughters, Rebecca and Andrea, who were 8 and 5 when their father was murdered, also opposed clemency and recalled that they were aghast when they had learned that their father's murderer was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. He had named it after his assistant Sierra (Shera in English localizations). Press conferences and rallies in more than a dozen California cities called for a halt to all executions and asked Governor Schwarzenegger to commute Williams’ death sentence to a sentence of life without parole; demonstrations against the death penalty also took place in numerous cities around the world. Cloud continues to pursue Kadaj, and confronts him again in a one on one battle, which is almost cut short due to the rest of the party arriving in the Sierra, Cid Highwind's new airship. The “California Moratorium on Executions Act”, A.B.1121, is scheduled to have its first hearing in January 2006. This rain water is thought to be Aerith's final limit break, Great Gospel. On November 29, 2005, the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California announced [31] that more than 175,000 Californians had signed a petition requesting the temporary suspension of executions in California until the California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice could complete its study due by December 31, 2007. A drop of water falls and Aerith's voice is heard, softly encouraging him "Let's go, Cloud". Tony Ford, who is up for execution on March 14 in a disputed conviction, helped organize a prisoners' strike in Texas protesting Williams's execution. Water wells up from the created hole and rises into the air, both physically harming Kadaj and healing Cloud of his Geostigma. Other prisoners were also involved in activism to save Williams's life. He misses, but hits the still blooming flower garden. See photos of some of the activist events to stop the execution. Cloud manages to catch up to Kadaj in the Church, where Kadaj tries to attack Cloud with magic. Celebrities also joined the fight, including Snoop Dogg, who appeared at a clemency rally wearing a shirt advertising the Save Tookie website and performed a song he had written for Williams, and Jamie Foxx, who - noting that Tookie's execution date was his birthday - publicly stated that the only birthday present he wanted was clemency for Williams. Its speculated that this is a sign of their friendship and also to show their grief for Aerith's death. Tookie's friend, co-author and political collaborator, Barbara Becnel, helped to spearhead much of the organizing. He removes his sleeve to reveal a pink ribbon which all of the party members have tied to their arms. Many anti-death penalty and civil rights organizations around the country organized activist campaigns to stop the execution, including the Campaign to End the Death Penalty, the NAACP, and others. A duel on the cycles gives Kadaj a head start, and slashes at Cloud's infected arm. The recurring segment offended some members of the public, who filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission. Rude had made a "refinement of Shinra technology," AKA strapping a bunch of TNT and fireworks together, which detonates and damages Loz and Yazoo. In the hour, they interviewed advocates of both sides of the issue and expressed their support of the impending execution. There is a chase scene on a partially constructed highway, where Loz and Yazoo both try and stall Cloud, who fail due to a timely arrival of Reno and Rude. In mid-November 2005, talk show hosts John and Ken of the John and Ken Show on Clear Channel's KFI radio in Los Angeles, California started a "Tookie Must Die (For Killing Four Innocent People)" hour on their show daily until the execution of Williams. Before Kadaj can celebrate, he notices Cloud is hot on his tail. Also during this period, the media, community organizations, and relatives of the victims were speaking out. Rufus is then saved by Tseng and Elena, who quickly shoot nets to break Rufus' fall. [30]. Kadaj still manages to retrieve it but doesn't know it has been hit. Supporters of Williams also made another plea directly to Governor Schwarzenegger to stay the execution. After a few missed shots, he manages to hit the box, causing its contents to spill. On December 11, 2005, the California Supreme Court denied Williams' request for a stay of execution. Rufus changes his target to the falling Jenova container. [29]. Kadaj leaps off the exploding buidling in order to try and save the box from hitting the ground. On November 30, 2005, the California Supreme Court, in a 4-2 decision, refused to reopen Williams' case. He then quickly pulls out his shotgun out from his jacket, and begins to fire at the gas pipe above Kadaj's head. While the clemency petition was pending before the governor, Williams also filed further appeals in the courts. Surprisingly, Rufus easily dodges it, and in the process he loses the bandages covering his head and allows himself to fall of the ledge. Schwarzenegger described the decision whether to grant clemency as "the toughest thing when you are governor, dealing with someone's life.". He tosses it off the edge of the building, and in a blind rage Kadaj fires a materia blast at Rufus. The one-hour, closed-door meeting took place as a crowd consisting of both supporters of Williams and proponents of capital punishment congregated outside the Capitol in Sacramento. He also reveals the remains of Jenova that is sealed in a black box, which he had been hiding on his lap under the blanket. On December 8, 2005, Governor Schwarzenegger held a clemency hearing. Meanwhile, Rufus reveals to Kadaj that he really isn't as weak as he was leading everyone to believe, jumping out of the wheel chair and throwing off the white blanket he had been wearing. At least one commentator felt this strategy was flawed: San Francisco Chronicle writer Bob Egelko noted doubts stated by the courts handling the appeals and quoted Austin Sarat, professor of law and politics at Amherst College in Massachusetts and author of Mercy on Trial, a book about clemency: "It's [actual innocence] about the only ground in which governors grant clemency in the modern period...I know of no case in which a death row inmate has been spared (solely) on the basis of post-conviction rehabilitation." [28]. With that, he goes through Bahamut's Mega Flare and finally takes it down using his Limit Break "Climhazzard". The clemency petition emphasized the theme of Williams' redemption, rather than his claim of actual innocence. He takes her hand, and she gives him the strength he needs to push through. Williams said he didn't want to be a "snitch." [27]. With the help of the entire party boosting Cloud into the sky toward Bahamut, Cloud has a vision Aerith reaching out to him, helping to get Cloud through Bahamut's largest attack. The Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County District Attorney, and other law enforcement disputed that Williams had in fact reformed, saying that he refused to divulge information on other gang members, or debrief officials on the tactics and communication methods that gangs use. But, "Braver" is not powerful enough to defeat Bahamut. The state, through the office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney, opposed the clemency petition. At first, Cloud performs his limit break "Braver" to hit Bahamut down the ground. (See below for the full text of the documents filed in these proceedings.). Bahamut wreaks havoc on the newly constructed Edge until Cloud joins in. In early November, 2005, Williams' attorneys filed his formal petition for executive clemency, as well as a motion to obtain new evidence. Cloud nods as the boy turns to run back to the bar. Those who campaigned against the execution included celebrities, politicians, and Nobel laureates. Denzel then says he'll go back to the bar too, asking Cloud if he'll return. In late 2005, a campaign began to urge the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to grant clemency for Williams in consideration of his work as an anti-gang activist and asserted "redemption." Thousands of people signed online petitions calling for Schwarzenegger to commute the death sentence. Cloud tells Tifa that he returned Marlene to the bar, and that the sin feels lighter, to which she smiles. The appellate court denied Williams' appeal in 2002, but noted that the federal courts were not his only forum for relief and that he could request clemency from the Governor of California. The members each protect them in turn, finally with the arrival of Cloud on Fenrir. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals heard Williams' appeal from the lower federal court. Denzel awakens from his zombie-like state after Denzel and Tifa are knocked unconscious from one of Bahmut's blasts. In 2001, the U.S. A sort of nostalgic scene ensues when the other Final Fantasy VII party members (Barrett, Red XIII, Cait Sith, Yuffie, Cid, and Vincent) show up at this point to battle Ex-Bahamut, as Tifa protects the possessed Denzel. The lower federal court denied the habeas petition. The Turks rescue some of the possessed children from Bahamut's first blast and then proceed to engage in a fierce melee with Loz and Yazoo, though they ultimately come out on the bottom. The State courts affirmed the conviction. Reno and Rude appear to call out Yazoo and Loz, and to add to the confusion, Kadaj then summons Bahamut Sin. Williams appealed his conviction in the state courts, and filed a petition in the federal courts for habeas corpus relief. Loz and Yazoo have used the children as human shields while they search for Jenova's head in a memorial statue dedicated to Meteor's destruction of Midgar. The Nobel Prize may not be awarded posthumously, therefore Williams is no longer eligible. Kadaj has unleashed numerous Shadow Creeper monsters to attack the people, and is seen in an incomplete building with the wheelchair bound Rufus. William Keach, a Brown University Professor of English Literature, nominated Williams for the Nobel Prize in Literature.[26] The Nobel Committee keeps nominations secret for fifty years. Hand in hand with Marlene, they head back to the city. Williams was reportedly nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize every year from 2001 to 2005. This slightly confuses Cloud, but he says he'll give it a try and let Vincent know how it goes. [23]. Vincent just replies that he had never tried. Bush commending him for his social activism, one of some 267,000 "Call To Service Awards" that were sent out. As the flashback ends, he asks Vincent if his sin can be forgiven. President George W. She pauses and says, "Have we lost to our memories?" Cloud just hangs his head and says, "But...we just let her die." Aerith's voice is then heard, suggesting to Cloud that he should forgive himself instead of drifting away. Harrison, a minister from West Monroe, Louisiana, Williams received a letter from U.S. Tifa has obviously had it with Cloud, and lectures him, speaking her thoughts about how he is pained by past failures, and how he always wants to be alone. On the nomination of William A. Hesitating, Cloud decides instead to go talk to Rufus. In 2004, he helped broker a peace agreement, called the Tookie Protocol For Peace, for what had been one of the deadliest and most infamous gang wars in the country, between the Bloods and the Crips, in both the state of California and the city of Newark, New Jersey. Rude tells them that the children have been taken to Ajit. In 1997, Williams wrote and posted on his website an apology for his role in creating the Crips. It is here Cloud has a another flashback of what happened prior to arriving to the Forgotten Capital. Williams' books have not enjoyed strong sales [22], though they may have been distributed as donations to schools, children's centers, and the like. After having a discussion about their current situation, Marlene comes and yells at Cloud when he says he wants to back down from fighting again. He wrote several children's books advocating non-violence and alternatives to gangs, an autobiography Blue Rage, Black Redemption, public service announcements, and Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story, a Hollywood movie which honored him. Vincent says he had also saved Tseng and Elena by nursing them back to health after they had been tortured by Kadaj's gang. After being released from solitary confinement, Williams gained world-wide attention and praise for his work in prison. This leads to a battle, in which Cloud is defeated by the three, but saved by Vincent Valentine. [21]. During the battle of one VS three, Cloud performs his limit break "Blade Beam" against the "Quake" magic attack from Loz. "The particular set is known as the Blue Note Crips, and that information we have received since his arrival here in April 1981 and as recent as June of 2000," Crittendon said. Kadaj begins calling him a "traitor" and is about to execute him when Marlene calls out Cloud's name, distracting Kadaj and allowing Cloud to grab his sword. But we have also received information that has identified him as an active member of the Crips," Crittendon said. Kadaj "controls" the children, using them as a human shield, and making them surround Cloud, ensuring that he cannot escape. Though the prison guards noted that he still remained a member of the Crips gang, "The violations are usually involving batteries on inmates, batteries on staff. Suddenly, he is confronted by a hail of gunfire. The prison official had observed no gang activity and complimented Williams on his behavior for the last ten years. Cloud hangs his head and asks to be forgiven, but Aerith just giggles and asks "By whom?" Cloud tries to turn around to face her, but the vision ends. According to a classification report found on page 8 of filings by his lawyers during the clemency proceedings [20], dated August 5, 2004, Williams had no violations since that time. She puts a hand gently on his arm, asking him why exactly he came. [19] The following is a list of Stanley Williams prison record through 1993. On his way, riding on his motorcycle Fenrir, Cloud has a vision of Aerith, standing back-to-back with him in a field of flowers. As inmate CDC# C29300 [17] Williams spent 6 1/2 years in solitary confinement in the late 1980s [18] for multiple assaults on guards and fellow inmates. Reno and Rude return, telling Cloud and Tifa that Kadaj has taken the children to The Forgotten City of Ajit. In response to questioning by the trial judge, the alternate juror stated that the jurors sitting in the center of the jury box had told her that after the verdicts were read, Williams looked at the jury and said that he was going to get all of them.". Cloud does not answer, which clearly frustrates Tifa. The trial record shows that after the jurors returned their guilty verdicts, Williams said, “Sons of bitches,” in a voice sufficiently loud that the court reporter included this statement in the trial transcript." "On the day that the jury began its penalty-phase deliberations, an alternate juror reported to the bailiff that some jurors believed that Williams had threatened them. She confronts him about his Geostigma, asking him if he wants to die alone. The Court of Appeals summary of the case [16] Williams stated "that various jurors misconstrued as a threat a question that he asked defense counsel at the close of the guilt phase. As it gets late, Tifa wakes up, finding Cloud staring out the window. [15]. They do, entering a trance-like state, the pupils of their eyes becoming narrow slits like those of Kadaj. According to Williams' defense attorneys, in two subsequent cases, District Attorney Robert Martin was censured by the California State Supreme Court for using race as a criterion in jury selection and had two murder convictions overturned on those grounds. He takes a drink and tells the children to follow suit. [14]. He then walks into the very lake where Aerith was laid to rest two years prior, and as he does so, corrupts it, turning it black. According to the clemency petition, in his closing arguments, Martin described Williams as a "Bengal tiger in captivity in a zoo" and said that the jury needed to imagine him in his natural "habitat" which was like "going into the back country, into the hinterlands." In a radio interview, Martin stated that the analogy was not meant to be racial, and instead was a metaphor to the fact that Williams appeared in court dressed in business attire much like an animal in a zoo appears more docile than it would be in the wild. They take the children to the Forgotten Capital, Ajit, where Kadaj tries to persuade them that the planet is inflicting this disease upon them and that they should rally together against the planet. [13]. The three members of Kadaj's gang begin kidnapping the children who are infected with Geostigma, including Denzel. The defense, however, has neither stated whether or not his mother was actually Filipino, nor refuted the evidence that McLurkin was black. They are found by the Turks Reno and Rude who bring them back to 7th Heaven. McLurkin's driver license photo and the fact that both he and his mother were born in the Phillipines was presented as additional evidence in a November 2005 petition for clemency. Cloud returns to the church where he discovers Tifa unconscious and his materia stolen, and collapses next to Tifa due to the effects his Geostigma. McLurkin was black. After a hard fought battle, Tifa is knocked unconscious, and Loz kidnaps Marlene and steals Cloud's materia. They maintain that the trial record indicates that none of the lawyers -- and particularly the prosecutor -- thought Mr. Loz arrives at the church, attacking Tifa while searching for the location of Jenova. [12] The defense responded that, contrary to the sworn affidavit, McLurkin did not appear black. It is here they discover that Cloud has Geostigma and does not have the will to fight it. [11] The District Attorney provided proof, however, in the form of a death certificate and the sworn affidavit of another juror, that juror #12, William James McLurkin, was black. Tifa and Marlene go looking for Cloud at the church where Aerith spent time and grew her flowers, and where Cloud has apparently been living. Williams' lawyers claimed that he was convicted by a jury that had no Blacks, one Latino, one Filipino-American, and "ten Caucasians". Vincent Valentine suspects that the trio is seeking to obtain the remains of Jenova to create another Sephiroth, and suggests that Geostigma is the result of Lifestream inside one's body battling the Jenova cells within it. The prosecution removed three Blacks from serving as jurors in Williams' trial. He somewhat knows Cloud, referring to him as "brother" and "traitor," most likely due to the fact that, though they are both "bound" by Jenova and Geostigma, Cloud is trying to stop Kadaj and his crew rather than embrace their efforts to further the virus. [10]. The leader of the trio, Kadaj, claims that Geostigma is due to the Jenova cells corrupting the Lifestream. "It's as simple as that," said Williams' spokeswoman Barbara Becnel. Three unknown figures appear and begin searching for Jenova's remains to complete the Reunion. They stated that people who appreciate Williams' work sent him money. He is coordinating searches by the Turks for the effects that Sephiroth had left on the planet. Opponents also pointed out that he received a significant amount of money from outside sources. The president of the former Shin-Ra company, Rufus Shinra, is confined to a wheelchair, due to the energy draining effects of geostigma. When contacted about Williams' alleged ongoing gang activity, Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman April Harding said there was no evidence of his gang leadership. In the center is a monument to Midgar's destruction - Meteor. Critics point to the fact that although he apologized for and renounced gangs and the founding of the Crips, Williams never renounced his gang membership, and allegedly continued to associate with Crips members in prison. The survivors of Midgar have begun to build a new home on the edge of the city, aptly named 'Edge'. The shell recovered from the Yang crime scene was conclusively matched to Williams' weapon "to the exclusion of all other firearms."[9]. With them is a boy named Denzel, who Cloud, Tifa, and Marlene have taken in as their own. The two shells recovered from the Owens crime scene were consistent with shells fired from this gun, with no exclusionary markings. While Barrett is away to settle his past, Marlene Wallace, Barrett's adopted daughter, is entrusted to the care of Tifa. Williams' lawyers have claimed that the District Attorney quashed a murder investigation in exchange for their testimony. Tifa's bar is now an orphanage for the infected children. According to the District Attorney, the husband was undergoing sentencing for receiving stolen property and tried for extortion. He had lived with her along with Barret Wallace and Marlene Wallace for a while in their newly recontructed bar, 7th Heaven in the city of Edge. Williams' gun was found in the home of a couple with whom he had been living. However, he has established his own delivery service with the aide of Tifa Lockhart. The Defense claims this expert's methodology was "junk science at best." [8]. Cloud Strife, who is also infected with the disease, has secluded himself from the world, still haunted by Aerith Gainsborough's death. No second examiner verified his findings. It is proving to be fatal, and children seem to be at greater risk. Even the shotgun shells found conveniently at each crime scene didn't match the shotgun shells that I owned." However, the prosecution's firearms expert, a sheriff's deputy, testified during trial that the shotgun shell recovered from the Yang murder crime scene matched test shells from the shotgun owned by Stanley Williams. Two years after the events of Final Fantasy VII, the Planet has begun healing itself from the devastating attack from Meteor, but a strange disease known as "Geostigma" ("Seikon-Shoukougun" or Star Scar Syndrome in Japanese version) has arisen. They didn't match my boots, nor eyewitnesses. The information below was compiled using various sources such as the FF7:AC IMDB Page, trailers, the Japanese release of the film, and the short stories contained in "On the Way to a Smile" written by Kazushige Nojima.. From the beginning of his sentence, Williams maintained his innocence regarding the four murders, alleging prosecutorial misconduct, exclusion of exculpatory evidence, ineffective assistance of counsel, biased jury selection, and the misuse of jailhouse and government informants.[7] Williams claimed that the police found "not a shred of tangible evidence, no fingerprints, no crime scenes of bloody boot prints. . [6]. The film's soundtrack, scored by Nobuo Uematsu, was released on September 28, 2005. The jury recommended the death penalty, and the judge accepted the recommendation and sentenced him to death. This was the first announced title in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. The jury also convicted him of robbery in both cases, and found that he personally used a firearm in the commission of the crimes. Special Editions of this movie have been released, including the Ultimate Edition "Advent Pieces: Limited", which includes the OVA Last Order: Final Fantasy VII. Stanley Williams was convicted in 1981 of all four murders with special circumstances on each count of felony murder (robbery) as well as multiple murder in the case of the Brookhaven event. However, due to the release date being pushed back several times, the timer was removed. Witnesses testified that Williams referred to the victims in conversations with friends as "Buddha-heads", a derogatory term for Asians. The official Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children website placed a countdown, showing the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds until the final release. Yu-Chin Lin was shot once in the upper left face area at a distance of a few feet. The movie received the Honorary Maria Award at the Festival Internacional de Cinema de Cataluña on October 15, 2005. Tsai-Shai also received two close range wounds, one to the tailbone, and the other to the front of the abdomen, entering at the navel. It was released in Japan on September 14, 2005, and the release dates for North America, Europe, Australia, and other countries are TBA. The forensic pathologist testified that Yen-Yi Yang suffered two close range shotgun wounds, one to his left arm and abdomen, and one to the lower left chest. Its official theatrical release date was on September 10, 2005 as the grand public opening. It was later determined that the Brookhaven incident netted Stanley Williams approximately one hundred dollars. It is slated to be released on DVD and on a UMD disc for the PSP handheld console. Robert entered the motel office and found that his mother, his sister, and his father had all been shot; the cash register was empty. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (Japanese: ファイナルファンタジーVII アドベントチルドレン) is a CGI-animated film based on the successful PlayStation game Final Fantasy VII that is set two years after the events of the game. Shortly thereafter he heard a female scream, followed by gunshots. Riichi. Robert, asleep with his wife in their bedroom at the motel, was awakened by the sound of somebody breaking down the door to the motel’s office. Miwa Hashiguchi. Inside the office, Williams shot and killed Yen-Yi, Tsai-Shai, and Yu-Chin, after which he emptied the cash register and fled the scene. Masahiro Watanabe. According to court transcripts, at approximately 5:00 am on March 11, 1979, Stanley Williams entered the Brookhaven Motel lobby and then broke down the door that led to the private office. Williams said that he “didn’t want to leave any witnesses.” Williams also said he killed Owens “because he was white and he was killing all white people.” Coward testified that Williams had bragged about the shooting, stating, “You should have heard the way he sounded when I shot him,” as he made gurgling or growling noises and laughed about Owens’ death. Jun Ishii. Once back in Los Angeles, Sims asked Williams why he had shot Owens. Isamu Tachihara. They had netted approximately $120 in the robbery. Akihiko Kikuma. Williams, Darryl, Coward, and Sims then fled in the two cars and returned home to Los Angeles. Mechanical & Creature Designer: Takayuki Takeya. Coward said that he next heard the sound of a round being chambered into the shotgun. Scenario Writer: Kazushige Nojima. Court records show that as Darryl and Sims walked to the counter area to take money from the register, Williams walked behind Owens, pulled the sawed-off shotgun from under his jacket and told Owens to “shut up and keep walking.” While pointing the shotgun at Owens’ back, Williams directed him to a back storage room and ordered him to lie down. The store clerk, twenty-six year old Albert Lewis Owens, was sweeping the store parking lot. Director: Tetsuya Nomura. Transcripts show that next Coward and Sims followed Williams and Darryl to the 7-Eleven market located at 10437 Whittier Boulevard, near Whittier, California. He then told the men that they would find another place to rob, and that they would all go inside so he could demonstrate to them how a robbery was done. Williams reportedly became very unhappy that Darryl and Sims did not follow through on the plan. And then we left.". Sims then "walked back from the back ‘cause there was somebody in there and just walked out the door and got back the car with, uh, Blackie. Garcia provided and lit one for him. Sims testified that he and Darryl entered the market, after which Sims walked to the back of the store while Darryl approached Garcia and asked for a cigarette. Johnny Garcia, the clerk on duty at the Stop-N-Go at the time, testified that he was just finishing up mopping the floor, and noticed a station wagon, along with four black men standing outside the door of the store. Darryl was carrying the .22 pistol that Williams had deposited in the station wagon earlier. Darryl and Sims, at the request of Williams, entered the store with the apparent intention of robbing it. Both vehicles exited the freeway in the vicinity of Whittier Boulevard, where they drove to a nearby Stop-N-Go market. Darryl and Williams got into the station wagon, Coward and Sims got into the Cadillac, and shortly thereafter they were on the freeway headed toward Pomona. Williams then suggested that they should all go to Pomona. Upon returning, Williams had a .22 caliber pistol, which he placed in the station wagon. Afterward, they went to another residence, where Williams left the others for a period of time. The three men then went to the home of Tony Sims, where they discussed where in Pomona, California they could go to make some money. Williams went into the Garret residence, and in about ten minutes returned with the shotgun. Williams frequently stayed with Garret, and kept some of his personal effects at that location including a 12-gauge shotgun. Coward followed the two in his 1969 Cadillac. A time after the initial meeting, Darryl, driving a brown station wagon and accompanied by Williams, drove to the home of James Garret. "Blackie", a reference to his African American heritage. Williams introduced Darryl to a friend of his, Alfred Coward, a.k.a. Court transcripts state that [5], Stanley Williams met with a man who is only identified in court documents as "Darryl" late sometime on Tuesday evening, February 27, 1979. Williams always maintained his innocence, though subsequent court reviews concluded that there was no compelling reason to grant a retrial.[4]. Williams was convicted of two separate robbery/murders in 1979. And eventually, we morphed into the monster we were addressing."[3] According to one version, the original name of the gang was the word Cribs from the first name of the gang, the Avenue Babies, and a reference to their youthfulness. But I was totally wrong. Williams said "we started out—at least my intent was to, in a sense—address all of the so-called neighboring gangs in the area and to put, in a sense—I thought I can cleanse the neighborhood of all these, you know, marauding gangs. According to many of the original members of the gang, it was initially started as a means to keep the streets safe, reducing violence and police brutality. Williams joined Washington in 1971, forming the west side Crips. The eastern side Crips were formed by Raymond "Truck" Washington in 1969. Williams Jr. [2] People mistakenly believe that "Tookie" was a nickname, but it was in fact his given middle name, which was shared by Williams and his son, Stanley T. Fremont Senior High School, but was expelled and did not graduate. He attended John C. Born to a 17-year-old mother in New Orleans, Louisiana, Williams moved to the impoverished South Central Los Angeles neighborhood when he was 6, where he made a name for himself for being a fighter and a "general" on the streets of South Central's West Side. . On December 13, 2005, Williams was executed via a botched lethal injection amidst debate over the death penalty and whether his anti-gang advocacy in prison represented genuine atonement. [1] A 2004 biographical feature film entitled Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story featured Jamie Foxx as Williams. He co-wrote children's books and participated in efforts intended to prevent youths from joining gangs. In 1993, Williams began making changes in his behavior, and became an anti-gang activist while on Death Row in California, Although he continued to refuse to assist police in their gang investigations, he renounced his gang affiliation and apologized for the Crips' founding, while maintaining his innocence of the crimes for which he was convicted. While in prison, Williams refused to aid police investigations with any information against his gang, and was involved in attacks on guards and other inmates as well as multiple escape plots. In December 2005 he was executed for the 1979 murders of Albert Owens, Yen-Yi Yang, Tsai-Shai Lin, and Yee-Chen Lin. In this case, the one thing that would be the clearest indication of complete remorse and full redemption is the one thing Williams will not do.". Without an apology and atonement for these senseless and brutal killings there can be no redemption. "Is Williams’ redemption complete and sincere, or is it just a hollow promise? Stanley Williams insists he is innocent, and that he will not and should not apologize or otherwise atone for the murders of the four victims in this case. "The dedication of Williams' book Life in Prison casts significant doubt on his personal redemption and… the mix of individuals on [the dedication] list is curious" … "but the inclusion of George Jackson on the list defies reason and is a significant indicator that Williams is not reformed.". From 1995 he "tried to preach a message of gang avoidance and peacemaking" … "It is hard to assess the effect of such efforts in concrete terms, but the continued pervasiveness of gang violence leads one to question the efficacy of Williams' message.". Williams had written books that instruct readers to avoid the gang lifestyle and to stay out of prison. A "close look at his post-arrest and post-conviction conduct tells a story different from redemption.". "Cumulatively, the evidence demonstrating Williams is guilty of these murders is strong and compelling" … "there is no reason to second-guess the jury's decision of guilt.". The basis of his request for clemency is the "personal redemption Stanley Williams has experienced and the positive impact of the message he sends," yet "it is impossible to separate Williams' claim of innocence from his claim of redemption.". "The possible irregularities in Williams’ trial have been thoroughly and carefully reviewed by the courts, and there is no reason to disturb the judicial decisions that uphold the jury’s decisions that he is guilty of these four murders and should pay with his life.". 15). Exh. (P. Subsequently, a stabbing instrument ("shank") made of sharpened plastic was recovered from where the fight had occurred. After a warning shot was fired, the fighting stopped. A guard ordered the inmates to stop, but the fight continued. Williams was one of the combatants. On July 6, 1993, a large fight broke out in the shower area. 14). Exh. (P. After the shot was fired, guards gained control over Williams. Eventually, gun officers responded by firing a round near Williams. Once again, despite being ordered to stop, Williams continued with the assault. On December 24, 1991, Williams was involved in another fight with an inmate. 13). Exh. (P. On October 19, 1988, Williams was placed in Administrative Segregation based on his association with the Crips street gang. 13). Exh. (P. Prison officials subsequently learned that this stabbing was done in retaliation for a September 22, 1988 stabbing of another inmate ordered by Williams. On October 10, 1988, Williams was involved in a fight that led to him being stabbed by Tiequon Aundray Cox (aka Lil Fee), a Rolling 60s Crips member, and fellow death row inmate. 12). Exh. (P. Eventually, after gun officers responded, Williams stopped the attack. The guard ordered Williams to stop but Williams continued with the assault. On July 4, 1986, Williams stepped between a guard and another inmate and began to beat up the inmate. 11). Exh. I have dusted many officers on the street, one more would not make any difference." (P. When the guard advised the female of the prison policies, Williams became verbally hostile and stated, "you are looking around too much and that's not your job. On June 8, 1984, Williams was observed participating in inappropriate behavior with a female visitor. 10). Exh. (P. Only after a guard fired a warning shot did Williams stop fighting. Williams, however, continued to fight. In an effort to stop the attack, the guard blew his whistle and drew his weapon. On February 16, 1984, a guard saw Williams bending over another inmate and striking him with his closed fists. 9). Exh. (P. On January 29, 1982, Williams again attacked a guard by throwing a chemical substance on him. 8). Exh. (P. As a result of that assault, the guard suffered from chemical burns to these areas and had to be taken to the hospital where he received emergency care. In one of these instances, Williams threw a chemical substance in the eyes and on the face of a guard. On January 28, 1982, Williams had two separate instances where he threw chemical substances at guards. 7). Exh. Williams responded by saying "you'll get yours boy, I can do anything now because I know what the gunmen will do…one of these days I'll trick you boy." (P. The guard then explained the line-up procedure to Williams. Williams refused the order and became hostile. On January 26, 1982, Williams was ordered to lineup for his return to his cell. 6). Exh. (P. Only after repeated orders did Williams stop. When Williams was ordered to cease fighting, he ignored the order. Williams was observed kneeling over the other inmate and striking him in the head with his closed fists. On June 30, 1981, just two months after being sentenced, Williams was involved in a violent fight with another inmate. |
