. At McClymonds High School in Oakland, California, one of Russell's basketball teammates was a future Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famer, Frank Robinson. The chain is also famous for its chili and its Frosty dairy desserts. He was life-long friends with another legend, the late Wilt Chamberlain, who many consider to be the greatest ever offensive player; their on-court battles were perhaps the greatest individual rivalry in the history of the league. In 1999 it pulled out of London and Hong Kong (the Hong Kong chain, located in Wan Chai, however, has already been closed). At one point, he refused to play a game when he and his black teammates were refused service at a local restaurant. After international expansion in the 1980s, the chain retrenched in the late 1990s. He was exceptionally active in the American Civil Rights Movement.

Peller, aged 84, was dropped from the campaign in 1985 because she performed in a commercial for Prego spaghetti sauce, saying she "finally found" the beef. In 1980, he was named the greatest player in the history of the NBA by the Professional Basketball Writers Association of America. Her famous line quickly entered the American pop culture (it was even used to devastating effect by Walter Mondale in defeating Gary Hart in the Democratic primary election) and served to promote Wendy's hamburgers. Russell has received virtually every NBA honor that exists, and in 1968, he received Sports Illustrated magazine's "Sportsman of the Year" award. Starting on January 9, 1984, elderly actress Clara Peller was featured in the successful "Where's the Beef?" North American commercial campaign for Wendy's. Russell served as player/coach from 1966 to 1969, winning two NBA championships; he later coached the Seattle SuperSonics (1973 to 1977) and Sacramento Kings (1987 to 1988), but did not succeed in winning another championship. The restaurant chain was named after Dave Thomas' 8-year old daughter, Melinda, who had the nickname of "Wendy." The corporate headquarters is located in Dublin, Ohio. In 1966, legendary Celtics coach Red Auerbach named Russell his successor as head coach; he thus became the first African-American head coach in US major league team sports history.

By 1989, Dave Thomas came out of retirement and started doing commericals for Wendy's and helped rebuild the restaurant until his death. Russell played for the Celtics from 1956 to 1969, winning the NBA championship every year except 1958 and 1967. However, by the mid-80's some Wendy's restaurants became underperforming and closed. Russell was also the captain of the 1956 United States men's Olympic basketball team, which won the gold medal at the Melbourne Summer Games. The first Wendy's restaurant was opened in Columbus, Ohio on November 15, 1969, and grew rapidly to open over 3,000 stores by 1985. Born in Monroe, Louisiana and raised in Oakland, California, the 6-foot 9-inch (2.08 m) tall Russell played college basketball at the University of San Francisco, which he led to NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956, including an impressive string of 55 consecutive victories. Wendy's is a chain of fast-food restaurants founded by the late Dave Thomas and owned by the United States corporation, Wendy's International, Inc. His major contribution to the sport was raising defensive play to a new level; he is commonly considered the greatest defensive center to ever play the game.
