Her final film appearance was in 1960's Strangers When We Meet. She is probably best known for her Academy Award nominated role as the mother of troubled boy Cole in the film The Sixth Sense. They divorced in 1951 but remarried in 1952. She has won three Australian Film Institute awards, including Best Actress in a Lead Role for Muriel's Wedding, in 1994, a role for which she gained 40 lb (18 kg) in seven weeks.
