In 2003 she published a book, Traci Lords: Underneath It All. A lifelong atheist, she donated her body to medical science. She has since become an active gay rights advocate. McQueen died in Augusta, Georgia as a result of burns received when a kerosene heater she was attempting to light exploded and doused her in fuel. In 1995 Traci made her solo debut, in colaboration with Juno Reactor, called "1000 Fires". She had one more role of some substance in the 1986 film The Mosquito Coast. Lords also appeared in continuing roles in several television series, including Married with Children (1987), Roseanne (1988), Melrose Place (1992), and Profiler (1996), with single appearances in MacGyver (1985), Highlander (1992), Tales from the Crypt (1989), and Hercules (1995), among others. By 1950 she had commenced a three year stint on the television series Beulah which reunited her with her Gone With The Wind co-star Hattie McDaniel. Some of her more notable films include Not of this Earth (1988), John Waters's Cry Baby, (1990) and Blade, (1998). She continued to play maids and small parts in various films including Since You Went Away, (1944), Mildred Pierce, (1945) and Duel in the Sun, (1946) but by 1947 had grown tired of the ethnic stereotypes she was required to play and ended her film career. She has played roles in a number of B-movies. She made her first film appearance playing an uncredited bit part as a sales assistant in The Women in 1939 and later that year filmed what would become her most identifiable role - as Prissy the maid in Gone With The Wind. While Lords decries the pornographic film industry, she continues to use the stage name she gave herself as a minor. Instead, the agents and producers who accepted her fake IDs were charged and people affiliated with the films in question experienced legal troubles for years. The case gave government prosecutors a high profile, unequivocal violation of the law to use in prosecuting the pornographers and distributors associated with Lords' films as effectively as possible. Adult book and video stores needed to pull hundreds of thousands of her videos and films from their shelves to avoid the serious accusations of trafficking child pornography.
