Chaim Topol

One of Chaim Topol's best known roles in an Israeli production was in the controversial Salah Shabati by Ephraim Kishon - a play, later adapted for film, depicting the hardships of a new Sephardi Jewish family in Israel of the early 1950s. Shortly before his death from lung cancer, Williams was awarded a papal knighthood. Some of his other notable appearances were in Galileo (1975), Flash Gordon (1980), Cast a Giant Shadow and the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only. Both devout Christians (though from different denominations), theirs was one of the most successful showbiz marriages, and they worked together on several series of the sitcom, A Fine Romance, from 1981 onwards. Topol is best known for his performance as Tevye the Milkman in the film version of Fiddler on the Roof (1971), for which he received a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination in 1972. He married Judi Dench in 1971, and they had one daughter. Chaim Topol (born September 9, 1935 in Tel Aviv), often billed simply as Topol, is one of the most famous of Israeli actors. His first film appearance was in 1962, and he subsequently appeared frequently on television (notably in Elizabeth R), and in British films such as Educating Rita (1983) and Henry V (1989).

Born to a Catholic family in Liverpool, he worked as an insurance assessor before going into the theatre as a career. Although best known as the husband of Judi Dench, Williams had a distinguished career of his own, as both a classical and a comedy actor. Michael Leonard Williams (July 9, 1935 - January 11, 2001) was a well-loved British actor.
