The song was re-released in March 2005 to raise money for the Comic Relief charity, with an accompanying video where Peter Kay mimed the song accompanied by various celebrities including Bez, Michael Parkinson, Heather Mills McCartney and Tony himself. In 2002, Q magazine named him in their list of the "50 Bands To See Before You Die". In 2002 "Is This Way The Way To Amarillo?" was used in the comedy series Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights, leading to a resurgence in his popularity. D'Angelo has a son with fellow neo-soul singer Angie Stone. In 1999 he was the vocalist on the Jarvis Cocker-penned UK top ten hit "Walk Like A Panther" by the Sheffield band All Seeing I. He also performed "Be Here" (with Raphael Saadiq) from the Saadiq album Instant Vintage. He played the role of Magaldi in the original 1975 album recording of the musical Evita and sought to represent the UK in the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest but came third in the national contest to select an entrant behind eventual contest winners Brotherhood of Man. The lead single was "Untitled (How Does It Feel)", a huge R&B hit, buoyed by an innovative video feature a nude D'Angelo performing the song with no accompaniment or ornamentation.

He also had a minor hit with "Avenues and Alleyways", the theme to the television series The Protectors. The much-delayed follow-up to Brown Sugar, Voodoo, was finally released in 2000 and debuted at #1. Born with the real name Anthony Fitzgerald in 1943, he had two top twenty hits in the UK charts in 1971 with "I Did What I Did For Maria" and "Is This The Way To Amarillo?". In the five year gap between Brown Sugar and the follow-up, D'Angelo appeared on several soundtracks, including Belly ("Devil's Pie"), frequently singing covers like "Girl You Need a Change of Mind" (Eddie Kendricks, Get on the Bus), "She's Always in My Mind" (Prince, Scream 2) and "Heaven Must Be Like This" (The Ohio Players, Down in the Delta), as well as appearing on Lauryn Hill's landmark The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
