Tom Selleck

Richard was an opthalmologist friend of Monica Geller's father and eventually one of Monica's boyfriends. He and actress Angelina Jolie famously wore vials of each others' blood around their necks while married to each other. Selleck also played Richard, a guest starring role on the popular former sitcom "Friends". Among these is a phobia for antique furniture (something shared by the Dwight Yoakam character in the Thornton-penned Sling Blade). Portraying the planning, politics, and preparation for the 1944 Invasion of Normandy, Selleck was critically lauded for playing a cool, calm Eisenhower. Thornton is known for various idiosyncratic behaviors, well-documented in interviews with the actor. Eisenhower in the History Channel's 2004 Made-for-TV Movie Ike: Countdown to D-Day. Thornton has also begun an ancillary career as a recording artist, in a rock & roll style known as "Americana." He has released two CD's: Private Rodeo and The Edge of the World.

Surprising many of his fans, Selleck unexpectedly played the role of General Dwight D. Even his role as the legendary Davy Crockett in 2004's The Alamo made an effort to demythologize the character and bring out his human foibles. He makes many such appearances in many television shows and sitcoms. His southern, small-town persona has led him to be cast in a number of down-to-earth, "regular guy" parts. Rising to 6'4", Selleck's dark hair, muscular, hairy-chested physique and trademark moustache make him popular for cameo appearances. Thornton is a rare celebrity in that he has A-list status, but plays both leading-man roles and character roles. Selleck is a libertarian and is a registered Independent. Sling Blade garnered international acclaim, won Thornton an Academy Award for his screenplay (as well as a nomination for his performance), and made him a star.
