Tim Matheson

He was previously married to actress Jennifer Leak. He died in Switzerland in 1983 of Motor Neurone Disease, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Matheson is married to Megan Murphy Matheson, with whom he has three children. Late in life, he gained critical acclaim for his memoirs of his acting career, The Moon's A Balloon (1971) and Bring On the Empty Horses (1975). Matheson appeared in the movie Van Wilder in 2002, playing the father of the title character who was inspired by his own character in Animal House 24 years earlier. He won an Academy Award for his performance in Separate Tables (1958). They were unable to reverse the decline and sold it in 1991. He resumed his career afterwards with roles such as Phileas Fogg in Around the World in Eighty Days and James Bond in the unofficial series spoof Casino Royale.

Matheson, along with partner Dan Grodnik, bought National Lampoon in 1989 when the magazine was facing financial decline. During World War II he served in the British army, rising to the rank of colonel in the British Commandos and landing at Normandy. He has also directed episodes of Third Watch, Ed, The Twilight Zone, Cold Case, and Without a Trace. Arriving in Hollywood during the 1930s, he first worked as an extra in westerns, then had a walk-on part in the 1935 version of Mutiny on the Bounty and progressed to leading man in MGM comedies such as Bachelor Mother (1939). More recently, he guest-starred as Vice President John Hoynes on The West Wing. Niven often claimed that he was born in Kirriemuir in Scotland which he believed sounded more romantic than London. Beginning his acting career as a child, Matheson provided the voice of Jonny Quest in the original series of that name before going on to act in over a hundred film and television projects. After attending Stowe as a boy Niven trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, which gave him the "officer and gentleman" bearing that was to be his trademark.

Although perhaps best known for his portrayal of the smooth talking, sex-obsessed Otter in the 1978 comedy Animal House, Matheson's career spans five decades, many genres, and several facets of the entertainment industry. His father died during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915 and his mother remarried Sir Thomas Comyn-Platt.
