System of a Down

System of a Down is a heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, USA consisting of Serj Tankian (vocals, keyboards), John Dolmayan (drums), Daron Malakian (guitar, vocals) and Shavo Odadjian (bass). All four members are of Armenian ancestry, and some of their songs are about Armenian history and politics.

History, style and influences

Their diverse instrumentals range from baritone electric guitars, electric mandolins, sitars, 12-string classical guitars to many other East Asian instruments. Their main influence is noticeably the heavy metal veterans Black Sabbath and Slayer, but they have many other musical influences such as jazz, fusion, Armenian folk music, classic rock, blues, industrial metal, and, vocally, opera.

The band enjoyed moderate success with their first singles, Sugar and Spiders, off their debut album System of a Down. However, their big break came from their sophomore effort, Toxicity, which debuted at #1 on the American and Canadian charts, eventually going multi-platnium. The album also has the dubious distinction of being the #1 album in America on the week of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Their first big hit was the controversial "Chop Suey!", released in the late summer of 2001. The title comes from a poem of Father Armeni, who wrote about Armenia after the genocide of 1915. He asked God why have you forsaken me in your eyes. Father Armeni also said that in Armenia a self righteous suicide has taken place. System of a Down received constant airplay in the United States throughout late 2001 and 2002 with their hits, Chop Suey!, Toxicity, Aerials, off their second album, Toxicity, and Innervision off their third album, Steal This Album!.

Their third album, containing songs from the Toxicity and System of a Down recording sessions, was released as "Steal This Album!" because early recordings of most of the songs had leaked out onto the Internet. There are four different designs of the album available. One version of the CD resembles a CD Recordable that was labeled with a felt-tip marker, and the other four featured designs by individual band members.

In 2004, the band recorded two brand new albums for release in 2005 that will be released 4 months apart from each other. They are Mesmerize and Hypnotize. Mesmerize will be released in May while Hypnotize will be released approximately four months after. The dates and order of release for these two albums were somewhat controversial among fans and fan sites in early 2005, as some believed that the release was to be in the opposite order and the first one was to come out in April. In early January, 2005, a new track called "Cigaro" was leaked onto the Internet (some say it was leaked by the band itself, considering it was leaked onto a web page which featured a "mesmerizing" spiral and was performed by the band at their Big Day Out appearances several days after the leak) to praise from fans.

Nu metal or not?

A common debate amongst System fans and heavy metal fans in general, is the topic of the band's genre: Are they nu metal (a term which to some people brings negative connotations) or is their music easier described as simply heavy metal?

It is argued by some that System of a Down rarely feature guitar solos and have typical nu metal song structure (verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus), and thus should be considered a nu metal band.

These arguments are also counteracted by the fact that they have not included rap in any of their songs, a typical, if not defining, characteristic of nu metal, but instead use occasional screams and growls that are typical of death metal. Another typical component of nu metal, the turntable, is not part of the band's instrumentation.

System of a Down have been labelled as nu metal by fans and media since their incarnation. This can be attributed to the release of their first album, which occured during the nu metal boom of the mid-to-late 90's. Adding to this, the band toured with Ozzfest, a festival that is typically features many up and coming nu metal bands.

Guitarist Daron Malakian was quoted in the magazine Guitar World as saying that he was glad that System of a Down had not slipped into the nu metal genre.

System of a Down have been labelled as nu metal by fans and media since their incarnation. In 2004, Shania decided to release a greatest hits album. These arguments are also counteracted by the fact that they have not included rap in any of their songs, a typical, if not defining, characteristic of nu metal, but instead use occasional screams and growls that are typical of death metal. Another typical component of nu metal, the turntable, is not part of the band's instrumentation. Since it was a double album, it has been certified 10x Platinum. It is argued by some that System of a Down rarely feature guitar solos and have typical nu metal song structure (verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus), and thus should be considered a nu metal band. Despite hit singles like "Gonna Getcha Good," "Up!" and "Forever And For Always," "Up!" didn't have the staying power of "Come On Over." It sold 5 million in America, roughly down 75% from it's predecessor. A common debate amongst System fans and heavy metal fans in general, is the topic of the band's genre: Are they nu metal (a term which to some people brings negative connotations) or is their music easier described as simply heavy metal?. It charted at the top for 5 weeks.

"Up!" debuted at #1 to good reviews, selling 874,000 in the first week alone. The dates and order of release for these two albums were somewhat controversial among fans and fan sites in early 2005, as some believed that the release was to be in the opposite order and the first one was to come out in April. Internationally the country mixes were replaced by world mixes. Mesmerize will be released in May while Hypnotize will be released approximately four months after. A double-album, it featured 19 songs in pop mixes and the same 19 songs in country mixes. They are Mesmerize and Hypnotize. Naturally, she toured again to support it.

In 2004, the band recorded two brand new albums for release in 2005 that will be released 4 months apart from each other. After having a child in 2001, Shania went back into the studio to record the follow-up to her blockbuster album "Come On Over." "Up!" was released in November of 2002, making it 5 years since the world had new material from her. One version of the CD resembles a CD Recordable that was labeled with a felt-tip marker, and the other four featured designs by individual band members. Many newer fans were totally unaware of her country music roots, particularly as singles released outside the United States and Canada featured remixed versions de-emphasising country-style instrumentation. There are four different designs of the album available. When the dust finally settled, Come On Over had sold 20 million copies in America and 39 million worldwide, making it the biggest album by a female artist in history. Their third album, containing songs from the Toxicity and System of a Down recording sessions, was released as "Steal This Album!" because early recordings of most of the songs had leaked out onto the Internet. Shania toured the globe in support of the album.

Over the next two years, the album stayed on the charts, spinning off hit after hit. He asked God why have you forsaken me in your eyes. Songs like "Don't Be Stupid," "Man! I Feel Like A Woman," "That Don't Impress Me Much," and "From This Moment On" joined the 11 songs that eventually saw release as singles. The title comes from a poem of Father Armeni, who wrote about Armenia after the genocide of 1915. It never hit the top spot, but with the single "You're Still The One," sales skyrocketed. Their first big hit was the controversial "Chop Suey!", released in the late summer of 2001. But slowly, the album started racking up sales.

The album also has the dubious distinction of being the #1 album in America on the week of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In 1997, Shania released her follow-up album, "Come On Over." Selling 172,000 out of the gate and peaking at #2, the album was seen by many at first as a disappointment, given the massive success of her last effort. However, their big break came from their sophomore effort, Toxicity, which debuted at #1 on the American and Canadian charts, eventually going multi-platnium. Initially known as a country music artist, after her musical collaboration with (and subsequent marriage to) rock producer Robert "Mutt" Lange, her music veered towards pop, with huge commercial success following. Her album "The Woman In Me" caught fire due to singles like "Any Man Of Mine" and "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" It eventually topped the Country charts for months and became a massive crossover on the mainstream charts, peaking at #5 and topping out at 12 million sold. The band enjoyed moderate success with their first singles, Sugar and Spiders, off their debut album System of a Down. In 1991, after an entertainment lawyer from Nashville heard her act, she was invited to record a demo tape. Their main influence is noticeably the heavy metal veterans Black Sabbath and Slayer, but they have many other musical influences such as jazz, fusion, Armenian folk music, classic rock, blues, industrial metal, and, vocally, opera. When her mother and adoptive father died in a car crash in 1987, Eileen took her two younger brothers and sister to Huntsville, Ontario where she supported the family by performing at a local resort.

At the age of 13, Eileen Twain was invited to perform on CBC television's Tommy Hunter Show.
