Diagnosed with leukemia, Lopez died while working on the set of Voulez-vous danser avec moi?, a French film with Brigitte Bardot. Sylvia Lopez is interred in the Cimetičre du Montparnasse in Paris.

Her acting roles after this were very few, and she devoted herself to other pursuits including study, and received a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science in 1975.
