She also returned to the stage, winning the 1985 Tony Award for A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg. She received an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Accidental Tourist (1988) and a Best Actress nomination for her role in Thelma and Louise (1991). In the 1980s and 1990s, Channing continued to work in television and film. She followed this up with roles in the short-lived television series Buffalo Bill (1983) and Sara (1985). On the basis of this, CBS offered her the lead in two short lived television sitcom series, Stockard Channing in Just Friends (1979) and The Stockard Channing Show (1980). She was working as a model when director Sydney Pollack spotted her, and cast her in Tootsie (1982) as a soap opera actress. In 1978, Channing played the part of Betty Rizzo in the hit musical Grease. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in drama from Boston University in 1979.

In 1975, she starred alongside Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson in Mike Nichols' The Fortune.
