Shannen posed for a nine page pictorial in the December 2003 issue of Playboy magazine. She is divorced from Roy Baker, with three children. Her private life has also been turbulent, with a six month marriage to Ashley Hamilton, son of George Hamilton. Andy Campbell. She is now a regular on the series North Shore, a return to her prime-time soap roots. Since 2002, Richarson has had a recurring role on the Lifetime medical drama program Strong Medicine as Dr. She hosted Scare Tactics on the Sci Fi channel until the 2004 season. After Home Improvement, Richardson appeared in several guest television roles, as well as made-for-TV movies, and won an Independent Spirit nomination in 1997 for her first starring film role, in Ulee's Gold.

She left that series in 2001, after three years, claiming that her best work was being wasted on a show "for 12-year olds" (though rumors persist that her departure was against her will, due to a feud with costar Alyssa Milano). Richardson received four Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nominations in this role. Although her departure from the series was reportedly acrimonious, it didn't stop Spelling from casting her in another series, Charmed. Possibly Jane Kaczmarek's role on Malcolm in the Middle could be seen as a more extreme offshoot of this character type. She starred on the Aaron Spelling-produced Beverly Hills 90210 for four years, from 1990 to 1994. Although considered sometimes overwrought and tightly-wound as a character, Jill Taylor was seen by critics as a fair representation of motherhood, on the whole more balanced than the usual sitcom representation. She was then cast as the oldest Witherspoon sibling, Kris, on the family drama Our House, which ran from 1986 to 1988. With early roles in programs such as Double Trouble and The Equalizer, Richardson also appeared in small roles in the films C.H.U.D. and You Better Watch Out, before finding her break-out part in 1991 as Jill Taylor in Home Improvement.

She first came to notice when she was cast as Jenny Wilder in Little House on the Prairie, which she followed up with roles in films such as Heathers. She began as an understudy in Angela Lansbury's Broadway production of Gypsy: A Musical Fable, eventually playing several parts. Born to a Navy family, Richardson attended the Hockaday School for Girls in Dallas, Texas, and was a 1973 graduate of Southern Methodist University, where she was friends with classmate Beth Henley.
