The trio hooked up with producer John Lewis Parker, who helped for their self-titled debut album, produced by Lava Records on May 27, 2003. In March 2002 Paul Cattermole, the eldest member of the band, announced he was leaving to join Skua, a nu metal band formed by his school-friends, though he remained with S Club 7 until June and continued to date fellow member Hannah Spearitt. The remaining six members stayed together under the name S Club until the release of their movie Seeing Double in April 2003, disbanding later the same month. That later led to a record deal with Jason Flom's Lava Records imprint, which was expanding in the wake of early signee Kid Rock's white-hot success. The series were retitled S Club 7 in Miami, S Club 7 in Miami, S Club 7 in Miami and Viva S Club. After playing numerous hometown gigs, Smile Empty Soul began venturing to the Sunset Strip, and later passed a demo to Todd Parker of the Los Angeles indie ThroBack. The show also became a big hit in the United States, where it originally aired on Fox Family and later on ABC Family.
