. -. At the time of this writing, Ryan was up for a Grammy award for his cover of Oasis's "Wonderwall" from Love is Hell. By comparing the musical styles of these two bands, the nature of any creative differences that may have led to the split become clear. A broken wrist suffered in a fall from the stage during a performance in Liverpool, England, put an end to his touring schedule for a while, and it appears that his album sales for Rock 'n' Roll and Love Is Hell (curiously, Love is Hell was orignially released in two parts, Part 1 the same day as RnR, then later merged into a single album) suffered as a result. All five former members continue to make music, Cedric and Omar with The Mars Volta, and Jim, Paul and Tony in Sparta. One attempt was made, with "So Alive," from his album Rock 'n' Roll which sounded like he was channeling Bono, circa 1985. Though the reasons for their breakup have not been made clear, Bixler Zavala and Rodriguez-Lopez have stated that they wanted their next album to sound like Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn while the other members of the band wanted it to sound more like Weezer, although this claim is not neccesarily made literally.

Ryan has released three albums since, and all have met with critical success, but he still has not had a breakthrough hit. At the peak of their popularity, following an epic world tour and with an ever-growing reputation, as well as an incredibly dedicated cult following that remains to this day, At the Drive-In split up in 2001, initially referring to the split as an "indefinite hiatus". On September 7, 2001, Ryan made a video for his song, "New York, New York." Featuring Ryan standing on the New Jersey shoreline, with the twin towers of the World Trade Center looming over his shoulders, and Ryan singing "I still love you New York," it became a near-immediate staple on MTV in the days following. The afro has, as a result, become somewhat synonymous with the pair's image. In 2001, Ryan released Gold, a sprawling sixteen-song album with a four-song bonus disc. He moved a bit more into rocker territory here, but stayed rooted firmly in his alt-country roots. At the Drive-In were also noted, by certain sections of the music press, for the afros that Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez sport. It was met with considerable critical success, but sales were slow. Despite this undoubtedly impressive set, it has often been remarked of At the Drive-In that they struggled to recreate their live experience in the studio, although they certainly tried to (their second full-length, In/Casino/Out, for example, was a live studio album).

Emmylou Harris, who was the legendary Gram Parson's singing partner, sang backup on "Oh My Sweet Carolina," believed by many fans to be the best song on the album, and maybe even in the history of alt-country. It was this reputation that contributed largely to the attention they received in the rock press towards the end of their career together, as well as the release of what is surely their best-known album, Relationship of Command. It is the story of the end of a relationship from one man's perspective. Influenced primarily by the likes of Fugazi and Drive Like Jehu and making epic, post-hardcore and sometimes almost-stadium rock with complex time signatures and cryptic lyrics, ATD-I's first studio recording was Hell Paso, an EP issued in 1994. They quickly developed a following as intense in loyalty as the band were in their playing - At the Drive-In's reputation for impressive live shows remains legendary to this day. Ryan made his solo debut in 2000, with Heartbreaker. At the Drive-In were a post-hardcore band from El Paso, Texas, who formed in 1993 and broke up in 2001. Their last album together, 2001's Pneumonia was held up by legal troubles and didn't come out until after Ryan had broke up the band and gone solo. The Mars Volta.

Being a member of a band was too stifling for Ryan's creativity - the only band member able to tolerate Ryan throughout was Caitlin Cary, the rest came and went in rapid succession. Sparta. Whiskeytown quickly moved to the front of the pack in this movement with the release of their second full-length album, Stranger's Almanac. Anthology (2005) - Compilation. Whiskeytown was part of the burgeoning alt-country movement which traces its roots to the work of a number of artists, most notably Gram Parsons. Relationship of Command (2000, re-release 2004) - LP. Ryan started out as a punk artist in a band known as "The Patty Duke Syndrome." They released two songs in 1994 on a 7" single (two songs on one side, the other side was a band called "GlamourPuss.") Ryan described punk rock as "too hard to sing" in the song "Lo-Fi Tennessee Mountain Angel" by his new outfit, Whiskeytown. Vaya (1999, re-release 2004) - EP.

He also produced an album by Jesse Malin, contributed to Beth Orton and Counting Crows albums, dated Winona Ryder, Beth Orton, Leona Naess, Carrie Hamilton, and Parker Posey, did specials with Elton John <who referred to him as "Oh Fabulous One">, Willie Nelson, and Toots & the Maytals, and found time to release a punk record with Malin under the name "The Finger.". In/Casino/Out (1998, re-release 2004) - LP. Ryan Adams is a highly prolific artist, releasing five albums since the end of 2000. El Gran Orgo (1997) - EP. Adams went on to put out his first solo record, Heartbreaker, in 2000. Acrobatic Tenement (1996, re-release 2004) - LP. He formed a band named Whiskeytown in 1994; they disbanded in 1999. Alfaro Vive, Carajo! (1995) - EP.
