Ross Alexander

His final film Ready, Willing and Able was released posthumously. He resides in Melbourne with his family. With his professional and personal lives in disarray, and deeply in debt, Alexander shot himself to death at his home in Los Angeles, California, using the same shotgun his wife Aleta Friele had shot herself with two years earlier. He loves cars and racing and often races in Australia. Although they continued casting him in films, the importance of his roles was greatly diminished. He's married and has a son, Claus, and a daughter, Sophia. Warner Brothers had decided by this time that Alexander's potential as an actor was limited, and that his personal problems did not allow him to focus completely on his career. Bana will next be seen in Curtis Hanson's Lucky You, and is reportedly one of several actors under consideration to play James Bond when Pierce Brosnan retires from the role.

Alexander soon after married another actress, Anne Nagel with whom he had appeared in the films China Clipper and Here Comes Carter (both 1936), and he attempted to move forward with his career. After this, his international reputation grew, and he played a supporting role in Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down and took the title role in Ang Lee's 2003 movie Hulk He also played prince Hector in the epic Troy (2004), based on Homer's Iliad. As his attentions continued she found it annoying, and Alexander was eventually confronted by Davis' husband who assaulted him. Chopper garnered world-wide attention, and won three Australian Film Institute awards, including a "Best Actor" award for Bana. Davis, who knew Alexander to be homosexual, at first found the attention amusing and harmless, and did not discourage it. Aside from a small role in the Australian independent-hit The Castle in which he played a kickboxer, Bana disappeared from Australia's entertainment screens for several years, only to make a re-appearance in the gritty black comedy Chopper in 2000, about the infamous Australian underworld figure, Mark Brandon Read. In his biography of Bette Davis, More Than A Woman, author James Spada writes of Alexander's infatuation with Davis that reached its height in 1936 with a series of love letters sent by Alexander to Davis. His most enduring character from his early career is the typically aussie character of "Poida".

The marriage ended the following year when Friele committed suicide. Later, he was the star and/or anchor for two short-running TV shows; the TV show Eric (1996), a sketch comedy show that he wrote, coproduced and starred in, and The Eric Bana Show Live (1997), a variety show. During this time Alexander took action to hide his homosexuality and married an actress named Aleta Friele in 1934. Eric Bana began his career as a comedian, first coming to national attention in the comedy sketch series Full Frontal. His biggest successes of the period were A Midsummer Night's Dream and Captain Blood (1935). He originally dreamed of becoming a car mechanic and tried his hand in odd jobs, including tending bar, where he also did stand-up comedy. Alexander was better suited to the Warner Brothers style of film, and the studio persevered with him, gradually increasing the stature of his roles commensurate with his growing popularity with film audiences. He was born Eric Banadinovich on to a German mother and a Croatian father.

He was signed to a film contract by Paramount Studios but his film debut in The Wiser Sex (1932) was not a success, so he returned to Broadway where his career continued to rise. By 1926 he was regarded as a promising leading man, with good looks and an easy and charming style and began appearing in more substantial roles. Born Ross Smith in Brooklyn, New York, Alexander began his acting career in Broadway productions during the 1920s.
