In 1876, the company was founded by Andreas Brandstätter in Fürth, Bavaria and produced ornamental fittings and locks. By 1921, the company mainly was producing metal toys such as piggy banks, telephones, cash registers, and scales. In 1954, production shifted to plastics. Hans Beck, who had worked as Head of Development at Geobra, and often called "The Father of Playmobil," developed the toy in the 1970s[1]. The Playmobil line of products was introduced in 1970 and marketed worldwide in 1975.

The company frequently introduces new products and product lines and produces other products and lines in limited quantities. It also produces small runs of promotional products.

For example, Playmobil introduced a limited edition sets with the livery of seven different airlines, sold only in duty-free shops. These practices have given rise to a sizable community of collectors.
