Bassey became a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (the female equivalent of a Knight Commander) on December 31, 1999. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6840 Hollywood Blvd. A few months later, Shirley Bassey signed to EMI Columbia, and the second phase in her recording career had begun. Paul Anka was elected to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1980. They ended up with both in the top 3 at the same time.

Born to parents of Lebanese origin, in 1999 he returned to Lebanon for sell-out performances at the Forum de Beyrouth (The Beirut Forum). Shirley also recorded Kiss Me, Honey Honey, Kiss Me at this time, and while As I Love You raced up the charts, so too did this record. He returned to his home town to buy a part of the Ottawa Senators hockey team. In February 1959, it made #1 and stayed there for 4 weeks. On September 6, 1990, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. It didn't sell well at first, but after a chance appearance at the London Palladium, things began to pick up. By the 1970s, Anka's career centered around adult contemporary and big-band standards, played regularly in Las Vegas. As I Love You appeared as a b-side to another ballad, Hands Across The Sea.

After more than ten years without a hit record, in 1974 he teamed up with Odia Coates to record the number 1 hit, "Having My Baby." They would record two more duets that both made it into the Top 10. In mid-1958, she recorded two singles which would end up as classics in the Bassey catalogue. From his movie work, he wrote and recorded his monster hit, "Lonely Boy." He then went on to become one of the first pop singers to perform at the Las Vegas casinos. That year she also recorded under the direction of US producer Mitch Miller in America for the Columbia label, producing the single If I Had A Needle And Thread / Tonight My Heart She Is Crying. In the 1960s, Anka would begin acting in motion pictures as well as writing songs for them, most notably the theme for the hit movie The Longest Day. Further singles appeared, and in February 1957 Shirley scored her first hit with The Banana Boat Song, which peaked at #8 in the British chart. His talent went beyond singing, writing Buddy Holly's giant hit, "It Doesn't Matter Anymore," the theme for Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, Tom Jones' biggest hit record, "She's A Lady", and "My Way," Frank Sinatra's signature song. Due to the suggestive lyric, the BBC banned it, but it still sold well nonetheless, backed with her powerful rendition of Stormy Weather.

He toured Britain and then, with Buddy Holly, toured Australia. Shirley duly recorded her first single, entitled Burn My Candle, and Philips released it in February 1956. He followed up with four songs that made it into the Top 20 in 1958, making him one of the biggest teen idols of the time. While she starred in this show, Philips A&R and record producer Johnny Franz spotted her on television, became impressed, and offered her a record deal. "Diana" is one of the best selling 45s in music history. She toured various theatres until she got an offer of the show that put her firmly on the road to stardom, Al Read's Such Is Life. The song, "Diana," brought Anka instant stardom as it rocketed to number one on the charts. He saw talent in Shirley, and decided he would make her a star.

Anka began singing as a child and, encouraged by his parents, at age 14 he recorded his first single, "I Confess." In 1957 he went to New York city where he auditioned for ABC, singing a lovestruck verse he had written to a former babysitter, Diana Ayoub. However, in 1955, a chance recommendation of her to Michael Sullivan, a booking agent in London, put her firmly on course for her destined career. By this time Shirley had become sick of show business and had become pregnant at 16 years old with her daughter Sharon, so she went back to waitressing in Cardiff. She next took up a professional engagement in Hot From Harlem, which ran until 1954. In 1953, she signed up for the revue Memories of Jolson, a musical based on the life of Al Jolson.

She enjoyed singing while she packed enamel pots, and to supplement her wage she sang in local pubs and clubs. Shirley first found employment packing in a local factory when she left school at the age of fifteen. Her father left when she was just two years old. She grew up in the notorious Tiger Bay area of Cardiff as the youngest of seven children.

Shirley had a Nigerian seaman father, while her mother came from Yorkshire, Northern England.
