Nell Carter, as Nell Harper on Gimme a Break!

Nell Carter (September 13, 1948 - January 23, 2003) was an American singer and actress.

Born Nell Ruth Hardy in Birmingham, Alabama, Carter won a Tony Award for her work in Ain't Misbehavin and appeared in Annie on Broadway and in the television shows Gimme a Break! and The Match Game.

Carter died from heart disease complicated by diabetes in 2003. She was the mother of two adopted teenagers. When she died, friends and family were surprised to discover barely $200 in her bank account. They were further shocked to discover that Carter had been living as a closeted lesbian, and that custody of her children had been left to her domestic partner.

Carter is interred in the Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California.

Carter is interred in the Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California. Bebe Daniels died of a stroke in London. They were further shocked to discover that Carter had been living as a closeted lesbian, and that custody of her children had been left to her domestic partner. The pair starred in the radio sitcom "Life With The Lyons" (1951 to 1961), which later made the transition to television. She was the mother of two adopted teenagers. When she died, friends and family were surprised to discover barely $200 in her bank account. Most notably, they starred in the series "Hi Gang" which continued for decades, enjoying considerable popularity during World War II. Carter died from heart disease complicated by diabetes in 2003. The couple did radio shows for the BBC.

With her husband Ben Lyon she moved to London in 1936. Nell Carter (September 13, 1948 - January 23, 2003) was an American singer and actress. She retired from Hollywood in 1935. Her later notable Hollywood films included "42nd Street". Paramont dropped her contract with the advent of talking pictures, but Daniels made a hit in the 1929 soundie "Rio Rita", in which she sang as well.

In the 1920s she was under contract with Paramount Pictures. She appeared in a number of comedies opposite Harold Lloyd. Her early roles varied from stapstick comedy to "bathing beauty" appearances. She was hired by Hal Roach studio in 1915.

For a time she went by the name Virginia Daniels. Daniels first appeared on film at the age of 8. The family moved to Los Angeles, California in her childhood. Her father was a theater manager and her mother a stage actress.

She was born as Phylis Daniels in Dallas, Texas. She started out in Hollywood in the silent movie era, and later starred on radio and television in England. Bebe Daniels (14 January 1901 - 15 March 1971) was a United States actress.
