. The quality and size of Watts' roles improved after Mulholland Dr., and she starred in the highly successful US remake of The Ring, a Japanese horror movie. Since the death of his son in 1983 he has been active in raising the profile of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome research, and is the current chairman of the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths. In 2001, Watts appeared in David Lynch's Mulholland Dr., a performance which won high praise but failed to gain her an Academy Award nomination. Later television work during the 1990s included guest appearances in the BBC's medical drama Casualty, Channel 4's adaptation of A Dance to the Music of Time and as himself as the resident celebrity in 'Dictionary Corner' on the daytime quiz show Countdown, also on Channel 4. Her first big break came with the 1995 movie Tank Girl with the part of Jet Girl. The audio plays are generally well received by fans, reinforcing the idea that it was bad writing that his Doctor's era suffered from, and not a lack of ability on Baker's part.

She first appeared in television commercials and then the drama series Home and Away in 1988 in the role of Julie Gibson. He has also returned to the role of the Sixth Doctor in a series of audio plays produced by Big Finish Productions, which team him up with a new companion, Evelyn Smythe (played by Maggie Stables). She only returned to acting when a casual invitation from a colleague to participate in a small play rekindled her passion for the scenic arts and prompted her to quit her job and dedicate herself completely to making it as an actress. Since leaving Doctor Who he has continued to act, mainly on the stage. Upon returning to Australia, Watts went to work for a local department store and from there she went to work as assistant fashion editor with an Australian fashion magazine. He is largely thought of as the least successful Doctor, though he suffered from inconsistent writing and a long hiatus as the show was moved back from the spring to the autumn schedules, and was sacked from the role at the insistence of BBC management wanting to refresh the show. In 1986 she took a break from acting and went to Japan to work as a model, but the experience was fruitless, and Watts describes it as one of the worst periods of her life, which lasted for about four months. At one point Maxil shoots the Peter Davison Doctor in this serial, and Baker often jokes that he got the role by killing the incumbent.

In Sydney, she attended several acting schools (and in the very first lesson in the first school, she met Nicole Kidman, with whom she shared a taxi home from class). Before taking over as the Doctor, he guest starred in the programme (as Commander Maxil, in the Davison serial Arc of Infinity), being the only Doctor to have done so. Her father was a sound engineer with Pink Floyd and her mother is described by Watts as a hippie "with passive-aggressive tendencies" who used to threat to send her and her brother to foster care in order to convince her grandparents to take care of the family, since her mother had no money after her father's passing. Baker also appeared in Blake's 7. Her grandmother, Nikki, was Australian, which made it easier to obtain the documentation necessary, since Naomi and her family were entitled to Australian citizenship. Before being selected to replace Peter Davison as the Doctor, Baker was an established television actor, his most notable role having been that of Paul Merroney in The Brothers. She lived there until she was 14. Playing the Doctor from 1984 to 1986, he had a mass of curly fair hair and a lurid patchwork coat, and was assisted by companions Peri and Mel. Following her father's death, her mother relocated the family to the town of Llangefni (more especifically Llanfawr Farm, a district of Llangefni), in Northern Wales, where they lived with Naomi's grandparents, Hugh and Nikki Roberts, although her mother occasionally moved the family around Wales and England, usually to follow boyfriends, but she always ended up returning to Llangefni. Colin Baker (born June 8, 1943) is a British actor who is best known for playing the sixth incarnation of the Doctor in the long-running science fiction television series Doctor Who. Her parents, Peter and Myfanwy Watts had separated when she was four years old, and when she was seven her father died. Watts was born in Shoreham-by-Sea, Kent, England, where she lived until the age of eight.
