In September of 1992 he underwent treatment for alcohol abuse at Sierra Tucson Center. Garfield has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7065 Hollywood Blvd. In 1980 he was involved in a serious skiing accident which sidelined his acting career for three years. Heart problems caused his death at the age of 39. They have two children. Involved in liberal politics, Garfield became caught up in the McCarthy Communist scare of the late 1940s and, even though he denied having ever been a Communist, his forced testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee damaged his career. He's been married to Jones since November 18, 2000. In 1938 he received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for his role in Four Daughters.

That same year, Douglas married actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. He decided to leave Broadway and try his success in Hollywood. They had one son, Cameron. The marriage failed in 2000 after 23 years after Diandra complained of his womanising, absenteeism and not being a proper father to Cameron. The play Golden Boy was written for him, but he was passed over for the role. Douglas married Diandra Luker on 20 March 1977. He won a scholarship to an acting school hosted by Maria Ouspenskaya, and made his Broadway debut in 1932. Douglas starred in Fatal Attraction with Glenn Close and the film became a world-wide hit. It was there that he was introduced to boxing and acting.

He is one of the most sought after actors in Hollywood and commands a hefty sum for his roles. Born Jacob Julius Garfinkle in New York City, he was sent to a school for problem children after the early death of his mother. Michael Douglas received an Academy Award as producer for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1975 and for the leading role in Wall Street in 1988.
