In September of 1992 he underwent treatment for alcohol abuse at Sierra Tucson Center. Garner is not to be confused with the Hempstead, New York mayor of the same name. In 1980 he was involved in a serious skiing accident which sidelined his acting career for three years. He most recently starred as Duke in Nick Cassavetes's The Notebook. They have two children. They had one son, Cameron. The marriage failed in 2000 after 23 years after Diandra complained of his womanising, absenteeism and not being a proper father to Cameron. He is one of the most sought after actors in Hollywood and commands a hefty sum for his roles. In 2004, Garner became one of the first three honorees in the World Poker Tour Walk of Fame for this portrayal. Michael Douglas received an Academy Award as producer for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1975 and for the leading role in Wall Street in 1988. He became a favorite of American fans for this role. All this changed with 1984's romantic adventure comedy Romancing the Stone. His role in this hit movie re-introduced him as a capable and likable leading man. But Garner's popularity eventually made him the sole star of the series. Though a capable actor, his career was somewhat stagnant after the series and he only appeared in occasional movies which were usually less than popular (for example, 1979's Running). His first film role was in The Girl He Left Behind, but in the late 1950s he starred in a popular Western series, Maverick, rotating the starring role of Brett Maverick with Jack Kelly and Roger Moore.

Douglas starred in the long-running TV series The Streets of San Francisco from 1972 to 1976. He moved on to television commercials, and then to television roles. He is the son of actor Kirk Douglas. In 1954 Garner had a non-speaking role in the Broadway production of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial.
