Quaid and Ryan had one child together, Jack Henry, born April 24, 1992. She also makes regular monthly appearances with close friend Colleen Lopez for special theme weekends on cable's Home Shopping Network. They divorced on July 16, 2001 after she had an indiscreet affair with actor Russell Crowe, with whom she was working on a movie. She has released two autobiographies, two self-help books, four diet books and a book about hormone replacement therapy. Ryan married actor Dennis Quaid on Valentine's Day in 1991 after co-starring in two films with him. A made for TV movie was made about her career on "Three's Company". Many of her films of the 1990s have been hits not only in North America, but also abroad. More recently she starred in the 90's sitcom Step By Step and cohosted Candid Camera with Peter Funt.

In 2003, she broke away from her usual roles, and starred in In the Cut, an erotic crime/thriller/mystery. She was the spokeswoman for the "ThighMaster", a piece of exercise equipment that is squeezed between one's thighs, which later spawned the "ButtMaster". The movie was favorably received and crystallized Ryan's on-screen persona as a bubbly, charming, feisty but incurable romantic, a role she has largely reprised in her biggest roles since. During the 1980s she became a Las Vegas entertainer. After several TV film and smaller movie roles, her first full-blown hit in a leading role was the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally. The suit was settled for about $30,000. Directors for this show especially liked working with her because she could cry on cue. After her contract expired, she sued ABC for $2 million, claiming that her credibility in show business had been damaged.

After a part in a feature film, Ryan, now using her new name Meg Ryan, landed the role of "Betsy" on the daytime drama As the World Turns from 1982 to 1984. She finished the remaining season on her contract, but her role was cut back to 1 minute per episode. She went into acting to earn extra money while in school. When ABC refused, Somers boycotted the second and fourth shows of the season, claiming illness. Ryan studied journalism at New York University. At the beginning of the 1980-81 season, Suzanne demanded a raise from $30,000 an episode to $150,000 an episode and 10% ownership of the show. She specializes in romantic comedies, but has dabbled in other film genres as well. She began acting in small roles during the early 1970s before landing the role of the ditzy blonde Chrissy Snow on the ABC sitcom Three's Company in 1977.
