On June 26 police announced that the death was being treated as accidental and no further action would be taken. Backus is an aspiring actor, who has appeared on the television show Will & Grace, but the couple met when he took her order at the restaurant where he was working as a waiter. Her boyfriend Calil, aged 30, who played her character's drug-dealing boyfriend Sean Hunt in Holby City, was arrested for questioning, before being released on bail. On June 11, 2004 she married Christopher Backus in a private ceremony; the marriage did not become public knowledge for more than two weeks. She died at Charing Cross Hospital on June 19, after a decision by her family the previous day to have her life support system turned off. Sorvino dated Quentin Tarantino for several years and more recently French actor Olivier Martinez. She suffered severe head injuries, and never regained consciousness. Since then she has had offers for co-leading and supporting roles, some of them having become box-office hits, such as Romy and Michele's High School Reunion opposite Lisa Kudrow, and At First Sight with Val Kilmer.

The building was the home of her boyfriend, fellow Holby City actor George Calil. The breakthrough role in Sorvino's early career was her portrayal of a squeaky-voiced, foul-mouthed prostitute in Woody Allen's 1995 movie Mighty Aphrodite, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In the early hours of June 15, 2003, she fell 40 feet (12 metres) from the rear window of a block of flats in Holland Park, an area of west London, apparently having previously taken alcohol and cocaine. Reviews of her first film performance were positive, which opened her doors for her following parts. She joined the cast of Holby City, a spin-off series from the long-running BBC medical drama series Casualty, in the show's third series. Soon she was promoted to casting director and to assistant producer, and was finally offered the lead role in the movie. Before joining the cast of Holby City, her best-known role had been as the character Judi Jeffreys in the children's television series Grange Hill from 1997 to 1999. When the 1993 picture Amongst Friends entered pre-production, she was hired as third assistant director.

She was born in Ascot in the county of Berkshire, and took up television acting as a young girl. One of her jobs was as production assistant in a film company. Laura Sadler (December 25, 1980 - June 19, 2003) was a British actress best known for her role as nurse Sandy Harper in the BBC ONE hospital drama series Holby City. Like so many other young actors, she worked at several jobs, waiting for an opportunity in show business. She is also a political activist affiliated with Amnesty International. She spent a year abroad in China, and speaks Mandarin Chinese. Her thesis was on anti-African sentiment in China (see Nanjing Anti-African protests). She was at Harvard University, where she graduated "summa cum laude" in East Asian Studies. Nevertheless, Sorvino acted in theater productions while in high school and later in university.

She was raised in New Jersey and dedicated most of her childhood to academic studies rather than preparing for an acting career, as her father did not want his three children to become young movie stars. Sorvino was born in Tenafly, New Jersey, and is the daughter of veteran actor Paul Sorvino (whose credits include Goodfellas, Oliver Stone's Nixon, and TV's Law & Order).
